Echo is very sweet and independent. Her favorite toys include the laser and plastic coils. Her sister, Foxy is also available for adoption and they love to play together.

Menifee Rocks?

The 1930s and 1940s were two decades that consisted of major construction projects, civilian and military, under the responsibility of the Army Corps of Engineers.  Projects included channelization of local streams and rivers and the construction of dams for flood control; military bases; and breakwater structures for the Los Angeles Harbor.

Building the breakwater in Los Angeles required rock and stone of varying makeup and size.  So, since large stones and boulders don’t grow on trees, the Army Corps of Engineers had to find materials sufficient, and large enough, to use to construct a breakwater.  Menifee, the town just south of our facility, was one area that was scouted out for such materials.  Tall granite hills and rocks and boulders dotted the landscape of the small farming town.  Here we share a photo that was submitted with a report to the Los Angeles District Office detailing materials found in Menifee, California.

Where exactly in Menifee was this photo taken?  Who was the man in the photo?  Did the Army Corps of Engineers use the rocks from Menifee for the breakwater?  If so, how would they transport them to the coast? These are all very good questions, but we don’t want to spoil the ending.  When our office reopens to researchers, you will have to visit to check out these records to find out on your own why Menifee rocks!

“By the early 1890s, the town of Menifee was recognized as an important model for an African-American community, as described in an article published in 1896 by the Freeman newspaper of Indianapolis, Indiana.. Dr. G. W. McNeice, the community doctor, was mentioned as the first “colored” physician licensed in Conway County. There were several “wealthy families and business houses” noted in the area.
