Pink Floyd's concert on a floating stage in Venice in 1989 is one of the band's most legendary and controversial shows.
On July 15, 1989, during the 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' tour, Pink Floyd performed on a massive floating stage anchored in the lagoon, facing St. Mark’s Square.
The stage, built on barges, was enormous and featured a spectacular array of lights, lasers, and sound equipment.
More than 200,000 people gathered in the square, on bridges, rooftops, and boats in the lagoon. The concert was broadcast live on Italian television to millions of viewers around the world.
However, it sparked a lot of controversy. Many Venetians feared that the weight of the crowd and the vibrations would damage the historic buildings. The protests were so intense that the mayor and the entire city council ended up resigning after the event.
Despite the controversy, for fans it remains one of the most iconic and magical concerts in Pink Floyd’s history.
