Julian was bending towards the bleeding ensign, yanking at his bag. A sudden, vice-tight pressure around his waist and Julian was yanked backwards into the darkness.
âLet me go!â he hissed.
âYou canât save everyone, Doctor!â Garak hissed right back, right into his ear, holding him pinned against his chest.
âI can save her!â
âDoctor, if you stop now, the JemâHadar will kill you and slaughter everyone on this station. The Dominion will win this. If you go to OPS, we all might stand a chance!â
Garak let him go. For a moment, he considered bolting. It would be a gamble. He wasnât sure which one of them was stronger than the other, but he knew for sure that he was faster.
Or did he? Heâd almost seen stars getting pulled backwards into the dark. It hadnât been a few meters, he could see that now. It had been almost 25.
âDoctor,â Garak was watching him, âI will not let you go back. I am going to stop you if you try.â
He could feel the tears. He could hear Ensign Lillardâs wet moans.
Garakâs fingers were fast too. If he hadnât the advantages heâd be rewritten to have, he wouldnât have seen the phaser come up or the setting flick from kill to stun.
âIf I have to render you unconscious to get you to the Commander, I will.â
He, humiliatingly, lost his sight to tears.
âI am stopping you,â Garak repeated, âI ⌠am stopping you from going back.â
He let the tears come, but he took a deep breath and started towards OPS anyway. He needed his hands to climb; he couldnât cover his ears.
*
âMr. Garak.â
âJust Garak, Commander.â
âDoctor Bashirâs reports tell me that without your intervention, Ensign Lillard might have survived the attack on the station.â
âAh, she did not. I am truly sorry to hear this, Commander. Believe me -â
âAre you? Bashir tells me you yanked him out of a fire fight with the JemâHadar that shot her and forced him at gunpoint to walk in front of you all the way to OPS.â
âDid he?â
âYes.â
âThe good Doctor may be under the misapprehension that I am very strong.â
âBased on Ensign Lillardâs autopsy, had you not done all of these things, she would have died anyway, followed by the Doctor and most of the people on this station.â
âWell, the good Doctor does tend towards the melodramatic - As ⌠Iâm sure you are aware, given that you are his commanding officer.â
âGarak.â
âYes, Commander?â
âBattle does things to a man. It hardens him. If Doctor Bashir does not become hard enough  to make those kinds of decisions for himself, he and everyone who reports to him will be just as dead as Ensign Lillard as soon as he's the most senior officer in the room.â
âI ... see.â
âThank you for saving his life. It saved all of ours.â Sisko leaned in, his voice a rumble almost as low as an engine hum, âIn fact, Garak, save as many lives as you want. But make another decision for him or any of my officers again and you will live to regret it.â

[Inspired by a tumblr post I canât find anymore about Ezri comparing Garakâs claustrophobia to her space sickness and making him pass out.]
Julian slammed the padd down on the counter so hard she jumped. âYou,â he turned to her, âWent into his shop, a public place, and tried to counsel him. He asked you to leave and you refused.â
âGarak didnât say that,â Ezri knew.
âOf course he didnât. Do you think I donât know him? Iâve known Garak for six and a half years! I watched the security footage. He asked you to leave, and you didnât! You -â He struggled to keep his hands from fisting, they stopped at claws. âYou forced him into therapy in a public place against his will, and how heâs in my infirmary because he couldnât breathe.â
âCaptain Sisko -â
âCaptain Sisko didnât want you to incapacitate him! Even if he had, you are a medical professional - you took an oath.â
âI -â
âFirst - do - no - harm!â He slammed his palm down onto the empty biobed between them in between every word.
âYouâve broken that rule yourself!â
âWhen?â Julian shouted, âTell me one thing youâve ever seen me do - â
âJadzia - â
âYouâre not Jadzia!â
âNo, Iâm not! She was never in love with you!â
Julian turned on her, slow and incredulous. âHow dare you use my feelings for her against me?â
âIâm not - Iâm not! Itâs ⌠I âŚâ
He stared, âYouâre joking.â
âI promise that Iâm not.â
âAll those memories - how can you be so uninformed about me? Medicine, ethical medicine is -â
âIt wasnât important to you when you fucked Melora! And what about Sarina, you canât possibly twist that into - â
âIâm the CMO of a Space Station! Everyone I fall in love with is going to be my patient sooner or later!â
âExcuse me!â
Their heads whipped around to find Odo, standing in the doorway to the infirmary, and behind him, a horrifying amount of onlookers.
âWhatever is happening in your infirmary, Doctor, is causing a significant noise disturbance on the Promenade. Is this a domestic dispute?â
âYou might be onto something there, Constable,â their heads whipped back in the opposite direction, where Garak had emerged from the private room and was only wobbling a little bit. He rasped âIf Doctor Bashir and Counselor Dax here were Cardassians, you would have to arrest them for public indecency.â
Ezriâs face burned all the way up to her hairline. Julian took a deep breath and folded his arms across his chest, staring at Garak. âWhat are you doing out of bed? Youâre supposed to be -â
â- resting, yes Doctor, Iâm aware.â Garak refused to look at either of them, eyes somewhere around knee level. âI think I might be better off doing that in my own quarters.â
âYou canât stand up straight!â Julian reached out, but froze when Garak flinched back.
âThatâs!â Garak almost yelped and then continued a little more calmy, âQuite alright, Doctor ⌠I wouldnât want to stay here too long. Canât have you falling in love with me now, can we?â
Julianâs eyes widened, his mouth tight. His head whipped around to face Ezri, who was staring at him again now, still pink with humiliation. His glare burned holes in her.
Garak continued a slow progress through the infirmary, holding on to whatever surface he could find and staying as far away from the two of them as he could. âConstable, if you would be so kind, I would quite appreciate the company on the walk to my quarters.â
Odo strode forward to offer his arm to Garak.
Julian tried one more time, âGarak, you -â
âIâll be sure to comm someone if Iâm having trouble breathing again, Doctor. Jabara doesnât live all that far from me.â
They watched the two of them leave. When they were out of sight, Ezri turned back to Julian only to watch him Julian collapse, his whole body still, nothing except the look on his face playing out his emotions.
She put it together.
âOh no,â she whispered.
Julian glared at her, âI think youâve said enough, donât you?â
Inspired by writing this and then wanting to write something where Ezri was the most competent person in the room - and also this:
âI âŚâ Garak blinked, then winced, âI canât remember.â
Sisko sat up, âWhat do you mean, you canât remember? Think harder, Mr. Garak.â
His heart was racing. Why was it doing that? There wasnât any reason for it. He felt a chill running through him, almost like it was inside his bones, and turned to stare at one of his shoulders.
âMr. Garak?â
It was so hot in here, despite the cold fingers in his bones. That must be why he was sweating. Maybe why there was a prickling under the scales of his neck.Â
âMr. Garak, can you hear me?â
He couldnât feel his body. It was so strange. He was looking out of his eyes. Those were his hands, his feet.âItâs hot.â Garak said.Â
âGarak! Sisko to Bashir, medical emergency in my office.â
That wasnât right. It had been so bright in the damn tube. âI canât remember, Captain.â
âI know you canât, donât think about that now. Can you take a deep breath?â
He thought about that for a little while and then said, âI think thereâs something wrong.â
âCaptain, what - Oh my God, Garak!â
The prickling heat was running through his eyes and jaw now, he could feel the muscles in his neck spasm.
âPut your head between your knees, Captain can you - â
âIs he going to vomit?â
âBashir to Dax, medical emergency in the Captainâs office.â
âThis is a private briefing!â He tried to glare at the Doctor, who was nearly upside down now that heâd pushed Garakâs head down like that.
âForget the briefing!â Sisko was being very loud.
âPlease calm down, sir!â
âI was just in OPS, what - Oh my God.â
âIf he goes down, weâre all fucked, Julian! Weâre all dead!â
âShut up Ben!â
âAll of you shut up,â Garak mumbled.
Surprisingly, they did.
If that one worked, maybe this would too, âGo away.â
âGarak, I need to get you to the infirm-â
Garak didnât remember much about what he started screaming about after that. The tube, the pressure, the Cardassians who he might as well have murdered himself. That Sisko cared about all of his crew, but Garak was just a tool. That the Doctor didnât care about him anymore so why was he bothering? That Ziyal was dead and sheâd been the last person to be happy to see him. When he ran out of words he realized that he was gulping sobs, crying like a child.
âWhat does he mean, a cabinet?â
âBashir to infirmary, emergency medical transport. Three to transport, energ-â
The Doctorâs word were choked off. Was he alright? Oh. He was being throttled. Only one hand, that should be easy to break. Maybe he could help? The Captain was trying to pry the fingers open, that was good. The Doctor was needed. The war couldnât be won without him. Save the Doctor. Get the girl. No, get the key. Kiss the girl, get the key.
The Doctor was very strong, wasnât he? That secret heâd had made him stronger and better than anyone whoâd worked or bled or killed to earn those skills. He was never in any danger, he could break - oh, like that.
âWhat the hell did you take, Mr. Garak?â
âHe didnât take anything!â She was very tiny, putting herself in front of him like that. Between the Captain and himself.Â
âShhhh!â He hissed at Sisko
âHeâs having a clinical anxiety attack, possibly with mild psychosis. Both of you get out of here and donât come back until I let you - Julian get away from him with that hypo! If you sedate him heâll never trust any of us again.â
âDonât trust him now,â Garak said, âKeeps making me stay alive.â
âWhat?â Bashir rasped.
âGo to the infirmary, Julian! Ben, get out!â
So quiet ⌠such a relief. No more questions. Quiet. Apart from the ringing in his ears. Or was that the sound of the JemâHadar ship again, from where he was in the tube? Why couldnât they just let him stop?
Eventually, he heard something else.
â - not in the tube. Youâre on Deep Space 9. Thereâs no one here except for you and me. Youâre in no danger. Can you hear me, Garak? Youâre not in the tube. Youâre not in the cabinet. Youâre on Deep Space 9. Youâre in a very big room. Can you hear me, Garak? Oh!â
He could hear her.
âGood, thatâs good. Can you take your shoes off, Garak? No? Can I take your shoes off? No, thatâs a no, I wonât touch you. Can you feel your hands? Good. Do you know what theyâre touching? Good, thatâs great. Can you put all of your attention to what youâre feeling between your fingers?â
He could do that. It was better than thinking about anything else.
âCan you tell me what youâre feeling in your hands? No, thatâs alright. I want you to think of five different words to describe how that feels on your hands. Not all at once, Iâm going to tell you how to breathe and at the end of each exhale, youâre going to think of a word. Ready? Good, thank you for trying. In through the nose ... hold, two, three, four, five, and out through the mouth âŚâ
âCoarse.â
âGood, thatâs good. You donât have to tell me, but Iâm glad you did. In through the nose âŚâ
*
He did end up allowing Ezri to take his shoes off to plant them firmly on the ground. When he wryly described the floor as filthy, she gave him a sisterly laugh and helped him put them back on.
He didnât know how long she talked to him, hypnotic in her gentleness. He found himself eventually able to understand what she was saying. She asked him if they could meet every day, just for a little while.
âNo one eats with me anymore anyway,â he said.
âWe can have breakfast, lunch, dinner, whatever youâd like. But in private would be best, so maybe not the Promenade.â
She didnât ask him how he was feeling. She asked him what he wanted to do next.
âSleep.â
âI think thatâs a good idea. Do you know where youâd like to sleep?â
âEverywhereâs too small.â
âHow about a holosuite?â
He thought about that. Sleeping under an open sky. In a ballroom. In a garden. âYes.â
âDax to Quark. I will be there in ten minutes, and you will have cleared out a holosuite for my professional use for the next twenty six hours.â
âNot that tired.â
âI know. I donât wanât you to feel rushed.â
He thought about standing, but the message didnât make it to limbs. At least they werenât cold and hot anymore.
âCan I help you stand? Thank you for trusting me. Here we go.â
She was so tiny. He had no idea how she was holding him upright.
Out of Siskoâs office. He glared at the Doctor, âYouâre not supposed to be here,â he hissed, and the human looked hurt. Good.
The rest of it was a blur, and then he was in a holosuite.
âHow does a field sound? Thereâs a rainforest on Trill that has a lot of flowers, itâs very hot. Alright, letâs try it. Computer, load program Ezbo12Beta. Add a Cardassian style bed. Alright, letâs get you over there.â
He closed his eyes.
âGarak, Iâm going to leave and bring you back water and food. You donât have to have them if you donât want to. After that, Iâm going to leave again, but Iâm going to wait outside to make sure no one bothers you until youâre ready to leave. Is that all alright with you?â
*
âHow did you do it?â Julian brought dinner to her, as she had refused to leave her post.Â
âIâm good at my job.â
âI know that."
âYou still think you could do it better, donât you?â
âI -"
âDonât bother. I donât think you should be here when heâs ready to leave,â she said.Â
âBut -â
âYou canât override me when it comes to mental health matters.â
He sighed.Â
âAnd donât try to talk to me about getting traumatized over this, itâs a conflict of interest. Youâll have to use an EMH.â
âThatâs too bad,â he swallowed. It was still a bit of a struggle.
âIt is for you.â She agreed. âIâm a very good counselor.â
When Kira got the word that Bashir was on his way and the reason why, the first thing she did was call Dax. "Really?" she asked, âThis again? This is what I think it is, right?â
âYes.â Ezri replied.
âAgain?â Kira waved her hands in frustration, âDidnât they break up during the War?â
âThey never were together!â
âYouâre joking.â
âI know, I couldnât believe it either. Julian wouldnât know his own feelings if someone made a sticker that said what they were and slapped it on every glass in Quarkâs.â
Kira leaned back, âThis is why you broke up, isnât it? Not Garak - this ⌠his inability to know his own feelings, and you ⌠working with feelings professionally.â
âNo,â Ezri laughed. âWell. Maybe. I didnât want to take my work home for the rest of my life.â
âDid you read the letters?â
âNerys! No, of course I didnât.â
âJadzia would have read them.â
âI care more about being professional than Jadzia did!â
