Tanacetum vulgare (common tansy)
Tansy is another Eurasian plant that was deliberately cultivated by early European settlers in North America for it's value as a medicinal plant. When John Winthrop planted the first seeds in the New England Plymouth colony in 1631 little did he realize how successful common tansy would be. It's now found coast to coast in in the US and is considered invasive in all ten Canadian provinces and the Northwest Territories.
Tansy reproduces by rapidly spreading rhizomes sending up new shoots. It also makes seeds that can lay dormant in the soil for twenty-five years. Any tiny piece of root can generate a new plant. Once established, Tanacetum vulgare is very hard to get rid of. Although sheep and pigs can eat it, horses and cattle get very sick. To cattle ranchers, common tansy is Public Enemy Number One.
