****
There was once a time when Mel Medarda had her life figured out. All the puzzle pieces lined up according to her vision. Through her own strength and will, Mel had climbed her way up the socio-economic ladder to be one of the wealthiest people in Piltover and an influential member on the Council. A time ago she took a chance on budding scientists and engineers Jayce Talis and Viktor in their HexTech research, despite others disdain. It had begun to pay off in dividends to see the influence of HexTech being applied on both the small and grand scale.
Shortly thereafter commenced the love affair between her and Jayce. Never before had Mel even entertained the idea she would be able to let anyone in the way Jayce managed to.
Maybe that was part of his charm. His tenacity and care were always part of the innate attractive features he possessed. Through the trials and tribulations of integrating innovation with civic structure, their relationship held true, hands intertwined and hearts beating strong as one.
It was around six months later Mel’s mother Ambessa arrived in Piltover with her fleet of airships and unknown intentions.
Mel steeled herself and prepared for what she thought to be the worst.
Of all the possibilities, Mel hadn’t anticipated her mother would arrive bearing the news that Mel's brother, Kino, passed away. Killed, to be more precise. The earth underneath Mel’s feet crumbled to dust and it hurt to breathe. She had just received a letter from him last month. He was doing well enough for himself in Noxus with their mother.
It came to a head for Mel realizing the last time she saw him was right before her banishment. That was over a decade ago. The letters she had received from him over those years would be some of the last pieces of evidence of his existence, of his presence, of his name.
In the undercurrents of the Medarda family’s grief, Ambessa carried in her spirit something darker, more sinister. The need for vengeance. Towards those that were responsible for taking Kino’s life.
Mel refused. She wanted no part of it. This wasn’t the type of route Kino would have wanted to take. He wasn’t that kind of man. To be sucked so deep into grief and other emotions the only way through would be war and more bloodshed. She had seen enough of that life growing up in Noxus and refused Ambessa’s plays. Piltover was her life now.
Ambessa was a sly woman, however, taking the multi-pronged approach. While Mel, acclimated to her plays, was able to stand her ground against her mother, others were less fortunate.
One most notably, Jayce. Pulled in by Ambessa’s sharp tongue and certain expertise, a rift grew between the couple. Days of arguing and steadily accumulating distance reached their peak when Jayce climbed aboard Ambessa’s airships back to Noxus. Mel was left standing on Piltover’s shores to watch the fleet shrink in the distance, her lips pressing tight in hot anger.
Turning around sharp on her heels, the sound of seagulls cawing in the distance was drowned out by the thundering in her ears and chest. She couldn’t fixate on the loss. She learned that the hard way early on in her exile. Only path for her was forward. There was plenty of work to still be done in Piltover, after all. They were officially down one council member, half of the brains behind HexTech and who really knew what lay beyond Piltover’s shores? Regardless, projects and progress should not be put on hold.
Since her mother’s visit and subsequent departure with Jayce in her grip, Mel took to setting a new routine for herself. Tend to business on the Council, attend the fancy galas and orchestras as expected from someone of her caliber, and check in to see if there was anything salvageable in the HexTech operations Jayce and Viktor were working on. When the time allotted for it, she would play with her paints.
She was feeling terribly inspired at the moment.
Days were busy, nights were long and before she knew it, at least a few weeks passed. It wasn’t until they were reminded of the summer solstice holiday coming up the following week, did it hit Mel. It made her straighten her posture while running the numbers in her head. Coming to a most certain conclusion, she swallowed tightly, and with every fiber of her being willed for the Council to be dismissed as soon as possible.
A discrete trip to the far-off apothecary that afternooon later, Mel swiftly returned to her penthouse with a brown paper bag held tight to her chest.
Surely it was due to stress, she told herself.
It could even be due to her diet not being according to her usual, she tried.
Denial.
It was one hell of a coping mechanism.
The six bold lines staring back at her became engraved in one of the deepest parts of her brain. She could rationalize one false positive, but three?
Nearly every which way, the statistical probability was near zero.
Mel’s vision narrowed to a point and her knees finally gave out underneath her. Kneeling on the bath math, fingers holding a vise-grip on the edge of the porcelain sink, Mel hung her head and quietly wept.

Excerpt chp 1:
”Excuse me.”
The stranger had the massive pack down and he was currently shaking some snow out of his dark hair. When she spoke he turned his attention to her. She crossed her arms, making sure to stay up on the landing so she had the height advantage.
”Who are you?”
“Oh, are you the landlady? I didn’t think we would be meeting. I’m Jayce, I’m renting the cottage.”
”No, I’m renting the cottage. You have the wrong place.”
