Yes, precisely this! I don’t disagree with people who disagree with the book’s politics, good lord there is a LOT to disagree with. But I can’t help but notice just how much of the criticism of the book and the author are laden with sexism, even by supposed progressives. Literally, so much criticism of Rand’s works fall back on criticisms of her appearance and her personal life, it is unreal.Â
But to the Tony Stark point, yes this exactly. Actually, conversely it’s one reason I think Tony Stark isn’t being examined closely enough today, the whole power fantasy of his existence is the idea that a titan of industry and former arms dealer could turn around and suddenly start caring about the world. We wish people like him existed because largely they don’t.Â
But yeah, he’s got a lot in common with Dagny and I kind of wish Dagny, on her own, in a near-future post-apocalyptic locomotive-punk sci-fi world existed as a character without all the rest of the Rand and conservative baggage because on her own she’s a really kick-ass character who absolutely was a female Tony Stark before Tony Stark existed. And, by the way, Stan Lee was almost certainly aware of this because Stark was originally designed as an indictment of the Randian style of tycoon and more of an anti-hero than hero (the movies really rehabilitated him). So the parallel is not out of place at all even going back to the creation of these characters., to say they were made around the same time period, in the same mold, and that Tony Stark was likely made in part with Dagny Taggart in mind.

Oh absolutely. They don’t always fall as hard in the category, depending on how they are being presented, but if you hit that “big colorful family that travels around stealing and causing trouble but still caring about each other” sweet stop........
