Remembering Mel Torme
(September 13, 1925-June 5, 1999)
Escuchaba los LPs del baterista Chico Hamilton "The Dealer" (Solid State, 1967) y "The Gamut" (Impulse!, 1968). El primero de ellos, muy en la línea soul jazz, presentó al joven guitarrista Larry Coryell y trae el corte "For Mods Only" de Archie Shepp, muy próximo en sonoridad y melodía al famoso “Comin’ Home Baby” que llevó al éxito Mel Tormé, y que versionaron Booker T. & The M.G.'s, Quincy Jones, The Kingsmen y Small Faces, entre muchos otros.
Tormé hizo la versión cantada de un tema compuesto originalmente como instrumental por Ben Tucker y cuya primera grabación fue del Dave Bailey Quintet en 1961. Después, Bob Dorough añadió letra al tema, y ahí entró Tormé con la versión vocal que se convirtió en un gran hit en 1962 con las respuestas vocales de The Cookies.
