Ayyyy (feel free to ignore this) I saw your beast of a video on Chinese Bromances was posted. I still have het to watch it (because its huge and my brain fatigue is still ToT aah). But! It reminded me I would lovr to ask if YOU had any specific show recs! Especially as a fellow chinese danmei enjoyer. (Do not rec: Kill to Love, Revenged Love, ABO Desire, or Meet You At The Blossom, as 1. Yes I know they're explicitly romance I just haven't had time yet 2. If they're REALLY top tier go ahead and rec them anyway it'll get on me to check them out sooner ;-; ) Any recs at all! Any shows from any country are game, but if they're on a TV I can check em out sooner. Guardian 2018 and Justice in the Dark were some of my favorite shows ever.
hey gorgeous i am many months late to this, but i saw on your other blog you wanted more chinese shows for language practice so your bitch is here to offer you recs!
Under the Skin
Shen Yi is an art savant who accidentally got an undercover cop killed with his art, and Du Cheng is that cop's mentee who hates him, but years later they get assigned to work together and as it turns out they're a perfect team. And also in love, but like. that goes without saying. I love love love love this show, AND the second season, and I want a third season YESTERDAY. It's one of the few crime shows that gives a voice to women and the marginalised within its crime vignettes, and nothing is ever really black and white, and I adore it for that.
2. Kill to Love
WUXIA DANMEI TOXIC YAOI BABEYYYYYYYY
3. Mysterious Lotus Casebook
I am so ride or die for this show I have sung its praises 400 times and you've reblogged gifsets of it so I assume you've seen it by now but just in case you haven't go watch my dying martial arts legend and his polycule of people who are just SO mad at him for dying.
4. Blood River
Gong Jun is FINALLY back to making fuck-eyes at other men and i am delighted, the time he was away was torture, i watched so many mediocre het dramas for him, thank god he's back.
5. A Dream Within a Dream
This is heterosexual, but I love it. I adore isekai stories and china does them so well - this one involves a woman getting sucked into the role of the tragic female lead and desperately trying to avoid her fate. It has some hilariously on-the-nose needle drops, a great cast of characters, and a decent romance. Also Liu Yu Ning is here!
6. Love in the Clouds
Another het drama, but with gay animal sidekicks (i refuse to elaborate) about a woman who is lying through her teeth, constantly, in order to find out who poisoned her, including lying to the one person she will eventually be unable to live without. These two have SIZZLING chemistry (who are we kidding, Hou Ming Hao has chemistry with EVERYBODY) and truly cdramas are bringing the steam and the actual ROMANCE back to het romances.
non cdrama but gay recs:
khemjira
this is easily one of the best shows that came out last year, about a guy who's fated to die before his birthday, and the shaman who is desperately trying not to let himself care even though they were lovers in a past life. The horror is great, the emotional core is great, the sex scenes are beautiful, and the friendships at the heart of the show are everything to me.
2. The Bangkok Boy
Thai/korean combo of warring mob factions and shady underground shit and the gay romeo and juliet style love story at the centre of it. The odds are stacked against them but by god they're trying their best.
3. The Journey to Killing You
A member of the yakuza is almost killed so he goes into hiding temporarily with a man assigned to him - little does he know said man is also planning to assassinate him, but WHOOPS, he ends up complicating things when they sleep together. I adore these two and their messy dynamic.
Also, once again it IS heterosexual, but Pursuit of Jade is currently airing - and do not hold me to it if the show ends badly - but right now it is a particular brand of crack that i am absolutely bouncing off the walls about. It's a gorgeous love story, which doesn't shy away from the horrors of war, and all the characters are so layered and wonderful. And most importantly, nobody has ever loved their wife more than this man.
obviously i have a whole catalogue more options if you need them, but I figure this'll keep you going for now 😭
