I originally passed on this one, saw a video of how it transforms, saw the super intricate second color wave, and... here we are. Honestly, as much as I like the combining MegaBoxes, I find them a little underwhelming compared to the BeastBoxes, especially since Primatus does the combining thing better than any MegaBox, including this one. Still, this is the best example of what MegaBox can accomplish, as it feels like it had a goal and broke the ceiling on it.
The Good: These things expand to be 5-6 times larger than the cubes they start as, and it’s ridiculous to witness. They are enormous compared to the boxes, which can fit in the palm of your hand. The combined Icarus, as well, is very big, standing twice as tall as Primatus who is made of twice as many Boxes.
The second color wave is also crazy. They’re covered in so much intricate detail. And it’s capable of modular combination like the rest of the MegaBoxes, coming with quite a few adapters to make it easier.
The Bad: While Icarus is impressive, it lacks the fluidity and solidity of 52Toys previous releases. It’s their only release to date where I need the instructions to transform it, and even when correctly transformed it isn’t very solid. A lot of the fins are not locked in place, and a lot of connections are loose.
Overall, it’s a fiddly release, but one that does a lot of impressive things. I would recommend it for the transformation alone. And while it isn’t the most solid MegaBox, it is definitely my favorite.
