Puffing on a Meerschaum corn cob pipe that was first created in 1869 by the Dutch immigrant woodworker Henry Tibbe (1819-1896), and popularized by the American writer Mark Twain (born Samuel Clemens, 1835-1910), and most iconic used by General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964).
In 1907, the H. Tibbe & Son Co. became the Missouri Meerschaum Company, which is based on the word German word meaning “sea foam” that describes the Turkish clay sepiolite used in making pipes.
I was able to get this pipe from the collection of my maternal grandfather Ramón Tañedo (1920-1990), who was a tobacco smoker.
