Even though I just made a post saying Styracomon is a good evolution for Triceramon, and they have a decent amount of visual connections, I want to make it clear that I do not think Digimon need to have visual connections to make their evolutions make sense or look good.
I know very little about Liberator and Medusamon, but I do think Medusamon to Styracomon is a unique and cool looking evolution line even if they have little to no visual connections
Now that it's been a while since the reveal of elizamon's second mega, i think i have gathered my thoughts better to say what i think about it.
They weren't going to make a better mega for the line than Medusamon, so i totally get going into such a wild direction. But boy do i wish Styracomon at least kept the pink and blue color scheme, it feels more like a very distant cousin rather than being part of the same digimon line, and that wouldn't be a problem if they didn't make the elizamon concept so present in every other stage of the line.
Still, i actually do like Styracomon's design (they should have made the skin blue but i dont hate the green), i like to imagine this is the mecha that protects elizamon's dragonkin kingdom and thats fun. I have seen a lot of people try to dig some deeper connection from the design that ties it to the rest of the line, i dont think it's that deep, they probably just reused a design that was already laying around.
Anyways, Medusamon is already a mega so i dont think elizamon's concept is left unfinished, so i dont have a big problem with styraco even if i was quite disappointed initially. Right now i just want to see the complete Maquinamon line, they need to add Dalphomon to the reference book already!!
How do I feel about Styracomon?
In a vacuum, I like her. As part of Elizamon's line, not so much
Based on the trend, I expected the evolution to be different, but she feels too different from the original line. I was hoping for the direction to steer away from snake waifu, but I'm not that into what they went for
My hopes were along the lines of a more monstrous wingless Hydreigon with more snake heads, or a crazy mass of snakes like Yunalesca's 3rd form. Maybe even a venomous Jormungandr. That crazy kaiju thing was also an amazing option
Compared to the other Level 7s, Styracomon's difference still feels more drastic than expected
Ryugumon and Ariemon are water yokai with purification abilities
While Nyabootmon is different from Cendrillmon, her base concept is still the same. A fairy tale with an emphasis on shoes
Pyramidimon and Magneticdramon are behemoths comprised of multiple structures held together by energy to make one powerful entity
Necromon and Dullahamon are phantom knights channeling the power of the dead
All of them so far have been the same concept done differently and Styracomon feels like her concept was just completely different from the start
I honestly feel like she should've been more of a mythical monster than an armored dino. Actually, I would've taken a tribal styracosaurus shaman warrior over a cyborg dino with missiles and heavy artillery. That would fit in with the line quite nicely while still being distinctly different
