What *is* a mediatheque?

At the risk of repeating myself…
Mediatheques, or Media Centres were popularised in the UK in the 1980s at a time when broadcast material was starting to receive recognition of its cultural significance alongside traditional archival holdings. As technology as developed, so have the interactive qualities of the Mediatheques, making them an engaging way for users to interact with the collections. Institutions such as the BFI and London Metropolitan Archives have notably installed mediatheques.
The last week of my traineeship has begun. I'm desperately trying to write up all my notes so that they are intelligible before I select bits which are interesting to write a last-minute article for the staff newsletter.
Mediatheques are interesting, they are a good way to bring people to a site and have them interact with the collections in a way which doesn't threaten preservation. They can make material accessible without the copyright issues of putting things online. Maybe I'll try to write something about this.
