How to Use Eye Charts and Slit Lamps?
Every person who has glasses or contact lenses has come across an eye chart in the doctor’s clinic. The eye charts are used by all kinds of eye doctors to find out the refractive errors in the patient’s eyes. Mostly after the eye chart examination, the patient is told to put their eyes in front of a machine that focuses a high-powered light in their eyes. This machine is called a slit lamp.
The Aumega III slit lamp has a narrow slit through which the light is focused in the eyes. The doctor can change the width and height of the light by adjusting the slit area. Slit lamps also have a high-powered magnification lens to examine the anterior structures of the eyes. Some advanced slit lamps also have a high-resolution video camera to record the various interior portions of the eyes. The doctor can look at the photos later on to conduct a minute survey. In this way, the eye doctor can be sure of the infectious diseases that the patient is suffering.
The eye chart dongle is used by the doctor to conduct a manual examination of the eyes. This technique is based on the subjective experience of the patient as the patient has to convey the results of the observation to the doctor. However, there is always a huge chance of manual errors. To avoid such errors, the eye doctor always performs a computerized eye test after the eye chart examination to match the results. In this way, the doctor can eliminate any errors.
