Chapter 1
Saltpaw lay curled into a tight ball inside the apprentice den, the nest still feeling unfamiliar beneath him. His gaze flickered over the other forms across the den. Fishpaw was blabbering his mouth off to Glimmerpaw, but the cream she-cat looked like she could care any less about the others words, her tail curling over her face with a huff.
‘’Hey,’’ Saltpaw jolted when he felt a paw jab into his side. He looked over to meet eye-to-eye with Crabpaw, the brown and white she cat staring deep into his soul.
‘’You seemed super spacey during your apprentice ceremony, do you really not care enough to pay attention?’’ Crabpaw accused, squinting her already small brown eyes at the silver tom.
‘’I do!’’ Saltpaw retorted, feeling his cheeks heat up in embarrassment under his fur. ‘’I was just… hearing something.’’
Crabpaw raised an eyebrow, visibly unimpressed before she scoffed. ‘’Oh, not you too.’’
‘’Me too?’’ Saltpaw leaned in slightly.
‘’You're not the first apprentice who's started talking to things that aren't there,’’ Crabpaw sneered, rolling over to do her own thing.
There there other apprentices hearing things? Maybe they knew what was happening. Maybe they were just as confused as he was.
The apprentice tossed onto his other side, squeezing his eyes shut.
‘’Listen…’’ Saltpaw's eyes snapped open. Silence.
Only the distant rush of waves beyond camp answered him. He let out a slow breath, convincing himself it had only been another dream before exhaustion finally pulled him into an uneasy sleep.
The camp was already stirring by the time Saltpaw awoke again. Gulls cried overhead while waves crashed against the shore in a steady rhythm. Warriors carried fish and crabs toward the fresh-kill pile in the clearing as apprentices hurried from the den, eager for their first full day of training. Fishpaw practically bounced out of the den.
"Come on!" he called over his shoulder. "Coralstrike said we're starting with swimming! Actual swimming!"
Saltpaw managed a smile before following after his brother. Quietbrook was waiting beside the camp entrance, neatly grooming the last bit of sand from her shoulder.
"There you are," she purred. "Ready?"
Saltpaw dipped his head. "I think so."
Quietbrook's whiskers twitched with amusement.
"Good. The tide is low. That means we'll have plenty of time before the water rises."
She led him out of camp and along the shoreline. The sea stretched endlessly beside them, sunlight dancing across its surface. Small tide pools reflected the sky while tiny crabs hurried beneath smooth stones.
"This is your territory now," Quietbrook meowed. "Every wave leaves something behind, and every wave can take something away. You'll need to learn which beaches are safe, where the currents change, and how to read the sea before you learn to hunt in it."
Saltpaw nodded, trying to memorize every rock and stretch of sand she pointed out.
They eventually stopped beside a cluster of tide pools.
"Drink," Quietbrook instructed. "You'll be walking for a while."
Saltpaw leaned toward the water.
The surface was perfectly still. Not a ripple disturbed it. His own reflection stared back—Then another appeared behind him. A silver she-cat stood within the reflection, water dripping from her pelt despite standing perfectly still. Her blue eyes were filled with quiet urgency. She looked oddly familiar, but he couldn’t place where he had seen her before.
‘’Saltpaw…’’
His breath caught.
‘’Please…’’
The tidepool rippled. The she-cat vanished. Saltpaw jerked backward so quickly he stumbled into the sand.
Quietbrook was beside him in an instant. "Saltpaw!"
He blinked wildly. "I—I thought I saw someone."
Quietbrook glanced toward the empty tidepool before looking back at him. "No one's here."
The ripples faded until the tidepool became perfectly still once more. The voice, however, did not. Saltpaw knew what he saw.
The rest of training became a blur. Quietbrook showed him how to step between slippery rocks without falling into deeper water. She demonstrated how to pin crabs before they reached their burrows and explained how the smell of the sea changed whenever the tide turned. Saltpaw tried to listen. He really did.
But every few moments—
‘’Listen.’’ A crashing wave.
‘’We need you.’’ A gull cried overhead.
‘’Please.’’
Saltpaw's ears flicked toward every whisper until he could no longer tell whether it came from the ocean or his own thoughts.
"Saltpaw." He looked up, startled.
Quietbrook had already crossed to the next rock and was watching him with narrowed eyes. "I asked if you noticed the current."
"...Sorry."
She hesitated before padding back toward him. "You've apologized a lot today."
Saltpaw stared down at his paws. "I'm trying."
"I know." Her voice softened. "You don't have to get everything right on your first day."
Saltpaw nodded, though he wasn't sure that was the problem.
By the time they returned to camp, the sun had begun its slow descent toward the horizon. Fishpaw came racing across the clearing, soaked from nose to tail and smelling strongly of saltwater.
"You should've seen it!" he laughed. "Coralstrike had me dive after shells! I swallowed half the ocean!"
Saltpaw chuckled quietly.
Fishpaw's grin slowly faded. "...You okay?"
"I'm fine." Saltpaw forced a smile.
"You've been saying that all day." Fishpaw squinted his eyes in suspicion.
Saltpaw opened his mouth. Nothing came out. Before he could answer—
‘’The water remembers.’’The whisper rolled through his ears like an incoming tide.
Saltpaw froze. Fishpaw followed his gaze toward the sea beyond camp.
"...Saltpaw?"
Quietbrook stepped beside the brothers, concern flickering across her face.
"He kept getting distracted during training," she meowed quietly to Tidebreaker as the older tom approached. "He says he's hearing things."
Tidebreaker frowned. "Hearing things?" Tidebreaker studied Saltpaw for a long moment, his amber eyes narrowing with concern before he simply nodded.
Saltpaw quickly looked away, feeling his cheeks flush in embarrassment for what felt like the millionth time that day. "It... it's probably just because I didn't sleep well."
Neither Fishpaw nor Quietbrook looked convinced. Far beyond camp, another wave broke against the shore.
‘’Listen.’’
Outsiders
Kittypets
Marbles - A plump white-and-black tom who lives in a farmhouse near MeadowClan territory. Friendly and curious, he often watches Clan cats from a fence and doesn’t understand why they never “stay for twolegs’ warm moss nests.”
Junebug - A small tortoiseshell she-cat who lives in a cozy cottage garden. She frequently sneaks out at dusk to “hunt” insects in the flowerbeds and insists she once saw a real fox.
Whiskers - A sleek gray tom with bright green eyes. Lives in a twoleg nest near TideClan’s coast and is fascinated by the sea. He sometimes tries to follow TideClan cats but always gets stopped by waves.
Pumpkin - An elderly ginger she-cat who enjoys sleeping in sunbeams and loudly judging everyone who walks past her garden. She has no idea Clans exist—but would absolutely disapprove of them anyway.
Rogues (Exiled)
Ashgazer - A scarred dark tabby tom who was exiled from SummitClan for attacking a deputy during a leadership dispute. Cold, calculating, and extremely territorial in the rocky foothills.
Brackenlash - A former MarshClan warrior who was driven out after endangering apprentices during a flood by refusing evacuation orders. Bitter, prideful, and distrustful of Clan rules.
Thornclaw - A thin, sharp-eyed she-cat rumored to have once drifted between all four Clans as a warrior before being cast out. She knows fragments of every Clan’s tactics and survival skills, making her unpredictable and dangerous.
Loners
Hollow - A quiet black she who lives in abandoned barns between MeadowClan and MarshClan territory. Speaks very little, but is an expert at tracking prey through scent alone.
Drift - A pale silver she-cat who travels constantly along riverbanks and marsh edges. She never stays in one place long enough to call it home and seems to know the tides and floods better than MarshClan cats.
Cinder - A small smoky-gray she-cat who scavenges across SummitClan’s lower slopes. Careful, intelligent, and extremely cautious around patrols.
Seaspray - A sandy tom who lives along TideClan’s outer shores but refuses to join them. He believes the sea is his only true “Clan” and speaks to it like it answers back.
Meadowclan
Territory
MeadowClan's territory stretches across rolling grasslands and wildflower-covered plains where tall grasses sway like waves beneath the wind. The open landscape offers excellent visibility, making speed and keen eyesight essential for hunting rabbits, mice, voles, and the occasional ground-nesting bird. Small streams and scattered groves of trees break up the sea of grass, providing fresh water, shade, and shelter during harsh weather. Though prey is plentiful during the warmer seasons, leaf-bare brings bitter winds that sweep across the exposed plains, testing every warrior's endurance.
Notable Landmarks
Sunwave Meadow – A vast field of waist-high grasses and colorful wildflowers that serves as MeadowClan's primary hunting ground. Rabbits and mice are especially abundant here.
Whispering Creek – A gentle stream winding through the territory, lined with reeds and willow trees. It provides fresh water and attracts prey throughout greenleaf.
Stonewatch Rise – A broad, rocky hill overlooking nearly the entire territory. Warriors use it as a lookout to spot predators, rival Clans, or approaching storms.
Rabbit's Maze – An intricate network of rabbit warrens beneath a grassy hillside. Hunting here requires patience and teamwork, making it a favorite training ground for apprentices.
The Lone Oak – A massive, ancient oak standing alone in the center of the plains. Its sprawling branches provide shade during hot days and serve as a traditional meeting place for patrols.
Breeze Hollow – A shallow, bowl-shaped depression surrounded by tall grasses that naturally shields cats from strong winds. MeadowClan often uses it for combat training and gatherings.
Golden Reed Marsh – A small marsh on the edge of the territory where reeds and cattails grow thick. It supplies medicinal herbs for the medicine cat, though the muddy ground makes it dangerous to cross carelessly.
Skylark Ridge – A low ridgeline where skylarks and other songbirds nest during newleaf and greenleaf. While bird hunting is uncommon, the ridge is known for its breathtaking sunrise views and serves as a quiet place for reflection.
Cats
Leader
Goldenstar - A golden tabby tom with amber eyes. Calm, wise, and deeply devoted to MeadowClan's prosperity. Excellent at reading the wind and predicting weather.
Deputy
Heatherstep - A lithe gray she-cat with lavender eyes. Quick-thinking, organized, and one of the Clan's finest rabbit hunters.
Medicine Cats
Mallowleaf - A cream-and-white she-cat with pale green eyes. Gentle and patient, known for her knowledge of herbs found in the marshes and meadows.
Thistlepaw - A small brown tom with darker stripes. Curious and eager to learn, often collecting herbs before being asked.
Warriors
Briarfur - Dark brown tom with thick fur. Brave and dependable, excels at defending the territory.
Dewwhisker - Silver she-cat with blue-gray eyes. Quiet, observant, and exceptionally stealthy despite the open terrain.
Cloverpelt - Tortoiseshell she-cat. Cheerful and optimistic, beloved by every apprentice she mentors.
Hareleap - Sandy-colored tom. MeadowClan's fastest runner, unmatched when chasing rabbits.
Sorrelwind - Reddish-brown she-cat. Fierce during battle but incredibly compassionate off the battlefield.
Flintfoot - Gray tom with white paws. Practical and level-headed, often leads border patrols.
Poppystem - Ginger-and-white she-cat with bright green eyes. Bold, outspoken, and fiercely protective of her Clanmates.
Larksong - Pale brown tom with a melodic voice. Known for lifting spirits during difficult times.
Hollowfern - A mottled gray she-cat with soft blue eyes. Thoughtful and diplomatic, she often helps settle disagreements among her Clanmates.
Reedshade - A brown tom with long legs and pale green eyes. Patient and observant, often waiting motionless before ambushing prey.
Butterflywing - A pale cream she-cat with amber eyes. Graceful and optimistic, she can move through tall grass almost without making a sound.
Apprentices
Rabbitpaw - White tom with tan patches. Energetic and constantly racing across the plains.
Fawnpaw - Light brown she-cat with gentle hazel eyes. Kind-hearted but determined to prove herself.
Breezepaw - Gray tabby tom. Clever and adventurous, often volunteers for patrols.
Willowpaw - Cream she-cat with soft green eyes. Patient and observant, showing promise as a future hunter.
Queens
Daisystem - White she-cat with golden ears. Warm and nurturing, expecting her second litter.
Kits
Mosskit - Gray tom. Adventurous and constantly wandering from the nursery.
Petalkit - Tiny cream she-kit. Curious about everything and loves asking questions.

Clan Customs
The First Run
When an apprentice earns their warrior name, they complete the First Run before the Clan celebrates. The new warrior sprints alone from the camp to Stonewatch Rise, then across Sunwave Meadow, and back to camp without stopping. It symbolizes leaving behind apprenticeship and proving they have the endurance to protect MeadowClan. The Clan greets them with cheers when they return.
The Whispering Vigil
Whenever a Clanmate dies, their body is laid beside Whispering Creek before the traditional vigil begins. The belief is that the creek carries the cat's final thoughts to StarClan on its gentle current. Warriors often place a flower or blade of grass beside the fallen cat as a final farewell.
The Tall Grass Challenge
Every apprentice must successfully stalk through a stretch of waist-high grass without disturbing the tops of the stalks. It's considered one of the final tests before becoming a warrior, emphasizing patience and careful movement over speed.

Prologue
The tide had only just begun to retreat when Nettlestar's call echoed across camp. Warm sunlight shimmered over the wet sand, and the scent of salt drifted through the dens as cats emerged from every corner of camp. Saltkit sat alone for a moment, his usual companion nowhere at his side.. He sat up taller to look for his father, Tidebreaker. The larger and much older tom walked slowly from a shaded part across camp and to the clearing, his usually stern gaze softening as he looked over his kit.
‘’Saltkit? Where is your brother?’’ Tidebreaker’s gruff voice mumbled to the tiny kit, his gaze breaking to sweep over the clearing.
Saltkit jolted when he noticed Fishkit was not at his flank. He whipped his head around until a sharp twinge ran through his neck. Saltkit then noticed the silver kit bounding forward, a grin plastered on the giggling kit.
‘’Sorry! There was a delicious piece of fish I just couldn’t pass up!’’ Fishkit slid to a halt, taking place beside Saltkit.
‘’Even for your apprentice ceremony?’’ Tidebreaker teased, curling his tail around his kits.
Fishkit gasped dramatically, opening his mouth to retort before Saltkit shoved a paw into the others maw to silence him as Nettlestar cleared her throat to speak.
Saltkit tried to pay attention, especially since this was practically the second most important thing in his life! The ringing grew louder and louder until he could barely focus on Nettlestar's words to the point his thoughts drifted so far that Tidebreaker had to gently nudge him toward the front.
Saltkit stumbled forward, knocking into Fishkit, which resulted in a ‘hey!’ followed by a playful hiss. The grey kit felt his cheeks growing hotter from embarrassment before he sat down, curling his tails over his paws as he looked up at Nettlestar.
The black tom stared at the two cats below him with his piercing sea-green eyes. Nettlestar assessed the two before glancing at the sturdy-brown she cat at his side, Poolstep, before turning back to the two kits. Saltkit gulped hard, perking his ears to hear Nettlestar’s voice better.
‘’Fishkit and Saltkit have reached the ages of six moons and are now to earn their apprentice names.’’ Nettlestar started, his body relaxing as he addressed the two. ‘’Fishkit, you will be known as Fishpaw, and Saltkit, you will be known as Saltpaw until you two earned your warrior name.’’
Saltkit, now Saltpaw, held his breath as he glanced at his brother beside him, who was practically vibrating in excitement. A few murmurs spread across the clearing of who would be whos apprentice, but one voice rang over the others.
‘’Saltpaw,’’ the voice echoed into his ear, sounding like the waves crashing along the beach.
Saltpaw jumped at the voice, turning his head to fully look at Fishpaw, who looked unbothered by the voice, as if he didn’t hear it. Saltpaw frowned slightly but looked back up at Nettlestar, awaiting who would be his mentor.
‘’Coralstrike, you will mentor Fishpaw. I trust that you will teach this young cat your courage and patience you have out on the beaches,’’ Nettlestar purred, watching as a reddish-brown she cat stood up.
Coralstrike pushed forward, tail lifted high as she grinned at Fishpaw, the two touching noses as mentor and apprentice always did when appointed to each other.
‘’Now, Quietbrook, you will mentor Saltpaw. I trust you will teach him the speed and strength you have brought to the clan,’’ Nettlestar spoke, nodding to a white calico she cat.
Saltpaw remembered watching Quietbrook stumble back into camp after completing her First Tide only a few moons ago. She had looked exhausted, seaweed tangled through her white-and-calico fur, but she'd worn the proudest smile he'd ever seen. Saltpaw grinned awkwardly at the she, touching noses with her carefully.
The meeting went on with ease and was soon dismissed. Cheers rang out, but then that voice echoed in Saltpaw’s ears again.
‘’We need you, Saltpaw.’’
Saltpaw’s fur bristled before being smoothed down by Quietbrook, who had not yet moved.
‘’Don’t worry. I may be a new warrior, but I’ll take care of you,’’ Quietbrook purred.
‘’Oh, no, it’s not that… Just… never mind,’’ Saltpaw frowned.
Quietbrook blinked but nodded, rising to her mitts. ‘’We will begin training tomorrow. I’ll see you around.’’
Saltpaw watched Quietbrook leave before watching Tidebreaker approach him, Fishpaw at his heels. When did he get to their father?
‘’That was a beautiful ceremony. I hate that your mother was unable to see it,’’ Tidebreaker’s voice turned more solemn.
Saltpaw frowned at his fathers words. He remembered his mother in broken memories before she passed. Saltpaw had barely opened his eyes before she was ripped from the living world from a flood.
‘’Don’t worry! She’s watching us from Starclan!’’ Fishpaw chirped, tail flicking behind him.
Saltpaw watched as his brother and father talked before his ears began to ring again, the voice whispering in his ears. Saltpaw felt himself growing more annoyed with the voice. What was it, what did it want from him, why him, and why did it need his help?
‘’Saltpaw, listen. Listen to us.’’
A Ripple That Did Not Fade
The Clans have always believed StarClan speaks through dreams, omens, and the medicine cats who walk between the living and the dead.
But when the stars fall silent, the water begins to whisper.
Across four territories, strange disasters strike without warning. Storms tear apart the coast, rivers swallow their banks, cliffs crumble into the valleys below, and prey vanishes even beneath the warmth of greenleaf. As fear spreads through the forest, four ordinary apprentices begin hearing voices no one else can.
A quiet TideClan apprentice.
A determined MeadowClan hunter.
A patient SummitClan climber.
A curious MarshClan tracker.
Dismissed as kits with overactive imaginations, they must decide whether to ignore the whispers—or follow them into a mystery that could change the Clans forever.
For even the smallest ripple can become a wave.
