John: Bob, if youâre gonna confess something, just say it.
Bob: âŚOkay.
John:
Bob: I stole your protein bars.
John: THATâS your confession?!
Bob: And also I might be in love with you but the protein bars felt more urgent.
John: YOUâ WHATâ
Bucky: walking by The bars were more urgent??
Yelena: Priorities.
Bob: He gets scary when heâs hungry.
John: YOUâRE TELLING EVERYONE IâM SCARY??
Bob: âŚYou literally threatened the vending machine yesterdayâ
John: IT ATE MY DOLLAR.
Yelena: god I love this soap opera.

New city. New apartment. New job. New life.Â
Maya was ready, though. After living in her parents house up until her mid 20s, she was beyond prepared to leave and get the change of scenery sheâs been craving since middle school. And with everything she did, everybody could see how sure of this she was.
She did everything without hesitation. She said yes to the Midtown School of Science and Technology without even taking the time offered to think about it. She signed the lease to the first studio apartment she found in Manhattan and she started packing the moment she knew the job and the apartment were hers.Â
By the beginning of June, Maya had moved everything to New York and was pushing her parents out of her apartment. But of course they insisted on staying.Â
âJust one night! I can make you dinner and help you organize the kitchen. Weâll be out of your hair by the morning.â Her mom practically begged, as she was, quite frankly very anxious about the entire move.Â
And of course Dad agreed, âI could install your shelves and build your bed frame so you donât sleep on a mattress on the floor tonight.âÂ
But Maya needed this. She couldnât wait another night to fully embrace the reality of her new life.Â
âNo, it is fine! Really!â Maya was already grabbing her momâs purse, and fishing her dadâs keys out of the pile of junk on the kitchen counter. âI want you guys on the road before it gets too dark. Just make sure you call me when you get back to Philly!âÂ
And through bewildered arguments at the daughterâs new found independence, Maya continued to walk them towards the door. She managed to yell over them, and then physically pushed them out of the apartment, âI love you! Drive safe! Dad, make sure to use your turn signals!âÂ
And like a coming of age film, she closed the door, fixed all the locks, and pressed her back against the door of her studio, her eyes scanning the first thing that was completely and utterly hers. She took a breath and felt excitement like no other started to fill her veins.Â
Maya spent the rest of the night fixing the bathroom and then the kitchen. By 3 in the morning she was freshly showered and sitting on the floor of her living room with her back pressed against the couch. She smiled at the cluttered space, a piece of pizza in her hand, and Shrek 2 spinning in the DVD player.Â
For the next two weeks Maya spent her days unpacking, arranging, decorating, reading, online shopping, rearranging, and singing at the top of her lungs.
Most afternoons sheâd go downstairs to the Corner Cafe that was renting the apartment to her. Maya would sit and work on transfer paperwork, brainstorm potential classroom setups, and draft book lists for the Fall semester. Every now and then sheâd make conversation with the barista, a high school student named MJ. Maya would ask about local bookstores, where to get the best Thai food, and eventually about Midtown. They both laughed when they realized theyâd probably be spending the school year together. Needless to say, Maya and MJ got along really well.Â
--Â
The following Friday afternoon, the Cafe was a bit more crowded. But all the same, Maya sat at her corner table by the pick up counter. She had always gravitated towards this spot, but now it was mostly to chat with MJ when things got slow and to cheer her on during the rushes. And MJ definitely needed a lot of support this shift.Â
And then to Mayaâs disbelief Natasha Romanoff walked in.Â
It was an interesting scenario considering everyone knew who the Avengers were now, but what was far more interesting to Maya was the way no one paid any mind to her presence. She figured it was true what they said about New York: everyone just minded their own business, really. In any case, Maya didnât feel any strong emotions towards being in the presence of known vigilantes, but she couldnât help but feel her muscles tense when Natasha stood at the side of her table.Â
A few moments passed and before Maya could properly comprehend what she was doing, she opened her mouth. âWould you like to sit?âÂ
Natasha was taken aback but nodded appreciatively, smiled and pulled the chair opposite to Maya and sat down. âThanks, stranger.â Natashaâs knees were facing the counter though, an elbow each on the back of her chair and another on the table they were now sharing.Â
A handful of moments passed again and Maya let out an exasperated groan after realizing that she, yet again, sent the wrong attachment to her new boss.Â
Natashaâs fingers were now rapping rhythmically, against the wooden table top and then she spoke up. âRough day?âÂ
Maya was a bit razzled, despite the fact that she was the one that opened up the possibility of a conversation just moments ago. âUh, yes and no? It's just a new job. It's a bit overwhelming, you know?âÂ
It was only after the words came out of her mouth that Maya realized she shouldnât have said her job was overwhelming to a person who fought crime for a living. She bit her tongue and braced herself for a laugh but it didnât come.Â
âYouâll get a hang of it.â It was at this moment that MJ called Natashaâs name out. She stood and pushed in her chair before grabbing the little white baggy off the counter. âTry one of the pastries. I promise itâll make you feel a bit better; theyâre the best in the whole city.âÂ
Maya gave her a small smile and a nod, âIâll do that! Have a good night.âÂ
âYou too, Stranger.â Natasha proceeded to pinch the little bag between her teeth, rummaging through her pockets and walking towards the exitÂ
--Â
In the following weeks, the interactions only became more frequent. It was probably every other day that the two would see each other at Corners.Â
At first it was Hellos and Goodbyes but eventually Natasha would sit at the same table with Maya while waiting for her order to be ready, not that it ever took all that long. Before the end of the month, the two exchanged names and Maya was happy to find that Natasha actually preferred to be called Nat.Â
Shortly after the proper introductions Nat started to enjoy her pastry at the table with Maya before leaving.Â
Very quickly, Maya grew tired of the same courteous conversations and started talking about her new teaching job and Nat helped in large part with all of Mayaâs online shopping decisions. Sometimes Maya was afraid of coming off as self centered but she was pretty wary of asking Nat about her life outside of the coffee shop. But, fortunately Nat was much more interested in classroom decor and keeping updated with Mayaâs personal challenge of trying every possible drink MJ was willing to make.Â
By July, Nat started bringing the other Avengers by for coffee runs.Â
Maya immediately hit it off with Steve. After finding out that Maya was a literature teacher, Steve would talk about how reading was his favorite pastime pre-serum and that heâd love to visit the classroom one day. He even geeked about the latte art that MJ would do in the wide mouth mugs for Maya. She and Nat did not miss the opportunity to laugh about this when Steve excused himself to use the bathroom.Â
It was peculiar though. Nat would tease that Maya and Steve were a literal match made in heaven. Sheâd go on about their overlapping interests and how smoothly they got along from the beginning. Maya had to think about it, though. On one hand, Maya thought, who wouldnât want to be of interest to Captain America himself?Â
But alas, Maya was the kind of girl who believed in the kind of love that you felt in your gut. And despite the blush on her cheeks when Nat talked about the two of them, Maya didnât feel it in her gut.Â
Weeks had passed and Maya had grown accustomed to greeting Nat, Steve, Pepper, Sam & Wanda whenever they made their way into Corners. None of them really stopped to chat, except for Nat and Steve, but Maya thought it was still nice to share small smiles and waves with the rest of them.Â
In the back of her mind, Maya thought a lot about the rest of the Avengers. She was well aware of Tony Stark and heard things about Vision in passing, but Nat eventually clarified that Tony doesnât get his own coffee and Vision still doesnât entirely comprehend the act of food consumption.Â
Truly, Maya was most curious about Steveâs best friend, Bucky. Steve did talk about him in passing from time to time but Maya knew to not straightforwardly ask about him. She knew the bare minimum about The Winter Soldier from the Daily Bugle and the tabloids. And knowing that Steve was his best friend, Maya bit her tongue despite all the questions flooding her mind whenever his name came up.Â
It was the last week of July when Nat finally brought Bucky to Corners.Â
--Â
In Mayaâs mind, aside from meeting Nat, Buckyâs introduction was the most memorable. When she thought long and hard about it, it was mostly because of the fact that Buckyâs first impression was distinctly different from the rest of them-- less chirpy, you could say.Â
When the two of them walked in, Nat basically made a beeline for Mayaâs little table and greeted her right away.Â
âHey, Nat! Pastry or coffee today?â Maya hummed, barely looking up from her laptop. She was intensely focused on finishing a thought about her lesson plan before properly opening herself up to conversation.Â
Nat sat to the right of Maya, her back facing the counter. Then, Nat gestured for Bucky to sit in her usual spot, across from Maya.Â
âPastries! I caught olâ Bucky here snagging some of my extras in the middle of the night, so I decided to let him in on the secret.âÂ
Maya nodded before properly looking up, âSounds like quite the racoon to me,â a small smile forming on her face. Then she lifted her eyes from her computer screen and there he was. Mayaâs stomach turned in the most peculiar way. Â
Bucky had on a hoodie and his hair was tied up in a low ponytail. The hood wasnât up on his head but instead fluffed up enough to come up around the bottom of his ears and his hands were in his pocket, resting in his lap underneath the table. He seemed hesitant to hold any eye contact with her, which Maya didnât take offense to, but he did manage to look at her for a moment.Â
He gave the smallest acknowledging grin before saying, âHello, Iâm James.âÂ
Nat was preoccupied during this small moment, busy trying to wave down MJ who was in the middle of pulling a shot of espresso. âMJ! Just the pastries today, but make it a double order, please!âÂ
Nat turned back to Maya before she could properly introduce herself to Bucky.
âYeah, he caught me with a jam filled one last week and has been snatching them ever since.âÂ
Maya smiled at this. âSo what? The jig is up? Everyone in the tower knows that tough Natasha Romanoff is obsessed with flakey pastries?â She loved to tease Nat, but some of her joy was being overcome by the tension she was creating in her own mind about even looking at Bucky.Â
Hearing him chuckle at her remark did help her muscles ease up though.Â
âHa. Ha,â Nat dully retorted. âThe only reason I decided to share my secret with him is because he wonât tell a soul. Itâd be much easier for me to gain my dignity back if I got caught, but he would lose most of, if not all of his tough guy credentials.âÂ
Maya giggled in response before looking straight into Buckyâs eyes and reassuring him, âDonât worry. Even if you get caught I think Cornerâs pastries are well worth losing your street cred.âÂ
Bucky chuckled and brought his flesh hand up to rub his index finger underneath his nose. âI think youâre right, doll. Iâd risk it all for another raspberry one.âÂ
Maya felt a wave of mixed emotions following Buckyâs response. She felt her skin grow hot after processing the outdated nickname and only hoped that her complexion wasnât visibly compromised. All the while though, she was glad to have been able to have any kind of conversation with him.Â
Fortunately for Maya, she didnât have to withstand that burning feeling for much longer because MJ called out Natâs name and she was quick as a cat to grab the little white bags off the counter.Â
Nat patted her hand on Mayaâs shoulder, not even bothering to sit back down. She looked at Bucky and nodded her head towards the door. âAlright, Maya! Weâre out. Iâll see you next time.âÂ
âYeah, get back safe,â Maya responded, her hand reached up and patted Natâs knuckles as Bucky pushed in his chair. âIt was nice to meet you, James.âÂ
âYou too, Maya,â and with that, Bucky gave a small wave and pulled his hood up as he and Nat made their way out the door and down the street.Â
âAnd no matter how hard you fought, you'd have to live with it. You'd adapt.Â
      Transform.
            Evolve.
             Metamorphosis.â
Summary: It had taken everything in her to walk away, but she did. She could ignore a lot but the last time was the last time. Bucky had cheated before but there was always a reason to justify it. As soon as she couldnât find a reason why, no another excuse to stay, she didnât.

âJust keep walking,â you mumbled under your breath. Eyes still facing forward firmly finally finding a target. You refused to dip your head. Â Look down. Â Let him or anyone else think you were sulking or any less confident than you had let on.
The truth was it broke you. Maybe it was because you hadnât been expecting it, your guard was down. You had never imagined that a simple wedding for someone either of you barely knew is the place you would be tested. There you were in casual conversation, suffering through some boring doctor finish his winded story with what you were sure was a sad punch line. Your mouth was tipped up on que to laugh with the crowd when you locked eyes. If that wasnât bad enough he laughed too.
God you missed his laugh. Your blood ran cold and your whole body locked. You hadnât seen him in almost 9 months. 8 months and 27 days to be exact. You felt like an addict counting the days. To be honest, you hadnât figured out if the counting helped or hurt. But he laughed. You got a fix and you were back at the beginning.
You didnât pull your eyes away. More like you couldnât pull your eyes away. You felt the breathe catch in your throat as you struggled to free it. He ran his lower lip thru his teeth and held it there. His eyes slowly took in every inch of you. The man standing next to him put out a hand for a shake.
âJames Barnes.â He said, trying to conceal shock in his voice. The man seemed to be in his mid-thirties, well dressed, and he spoke with confidence.  âWhat an honor, sir. I canât believe you accepted our invitation. We canât thank you enough for everything you did for my sister. This wedding has been her dream come true and it never would have happened if you hadnât step in andâŚâŚâŚâ his voice drowned out in your head as Buckyâs lip finally escaped his teeth. His perfect teeth. And you knew what he was thinking. Â
Red. Â You wore red.
You couldnât catch your breath as he moaned into your neck. He had pushed you into a random closet just off the main hallway. It was the middle of the day and you were at a ladies lunch where they were honoring Bucky for all the money and work he had put in to getting a new womenâs shelter build. Â This was the first time he had shown you what it was like when he wasnât in complete control. Not that the relationship was new by any means. But he grabbed your wrist and pulled you, catching you off guard. You fell into him and he slammed the door shut.
âYou shouldnât have worn red.â Lust had changed the color of his eyes. Â He was biting his lips so hard you were waiting to see blood that never appeared. It was a simple red dress. Very reminiscent of the infamous white one Marilyn Monroe had worn. Your hand reached up to cup the back of his neck as he tangled his fingers in your hair pulling at it slightly.
âKiss me, Bucky.â You smiled into his mouth as you forehead touched his. You laughed a little being flirting âHurry, before they start looking for us. Letâs go.â You nipped his lip a little then turned, pulling at his hand to leave. He used the hold on he still hand around your wrist to spin you back into him, and he let out a low growl. You loved this side of him. He grabbed your thigh and pulled you up pinning you against the door with his body.
âYou really shouldnât have worn red. I canât control myself with the way you look right now.â With that he smashed his lips into yours, his tongue piercing through your lips tasting you. You moaned into his kiss. You wrap your legs around his body pulling him that much closer. One of his hands slid up to your core to find that you werenât wearing any underwear. You never were. He liked that about you. He needed to know how wet you were, that always turned him on. And you stepped up as you always did, absolutely sopping. Â He was always aggressive but a handful of times he had taken it a bit too far and you had to put him in his place. Your mind began to race that this was one of those times.
He grabbed at you. Biting and sucking on your skin you could feel him leaving marks already. One hand holding you he reached to undo his pants and free his hardening member. You tried to plead with him, âJamesâŚ..â the word fell off. God he felt good. â waitâŚâŚ.we canâtâŚâŚ.Jaâ it fell on deaf ears. He pinned you back and lined himself up to enter you. You held in a breath waiting for it to tear into you and he stopped. Dead still not a muscle flinching and he looked you dead in to eyes.
âIs this ok?â he stared into your eyes. You let out the breathe you didnât know you were holding in and nodded hard. Â He must have looked a little startled because he still didnât move. âAre you sure? You donât look sure. I love you. Iâm not some animal. Not when it comes to you at least. I can stop if you want me to.â
You pulled his hair tighter âRavage me. I still want to feel this tomorrow.â With that he filled you, pressing his body into you, and keeping a punishing pace. You bit into his shoulder to muffle the sounds.
This dress however. This dress was tight and satin. This dress used as little fabric as possible but still held an elegance enough to wear to a formal outing. It hugged every inch of you perfectly and for Bucky left just enough to the imagination to send it brain into overdrive. Â
âSo really man we canât thank you enough.â He clapped his hand on Buckyâs shoulder now giving him a broad smile. âI donât know how you did it man, but thanksâ
Thatâs when he finally took his eyes off of you for the first time. âWell, I have to say being the boss does have its perks.â He said casually. Thatâs when you took your chance. Leaning in to excuse yourself with the woman next to you, you walked with a purpose right out the doors and into the hallway. You were headed to the bathroom when you saw Oliver, your target. With as much grace as you could muster you gently linked your arms in his and leaned in to tell him you werenât feeling well and wanted to leave.
He pressed a kiss to your temple. Excused himself from the conversation and the two of you walked down the hall towards the exit. Against every good thought you had inside of you, you turned to glance behind you. He was standing in the doorway of the hall. Glass in hand. Just watching. Watching you walk away on the arm of another man.

It had taken nearly a week for Maya to stop over analyzing whether she made a weird impression when she met Bucky, and it was August now. She had to clear her mind to polish up her lesson plans and start worrying more about getting her classroom ready for September.Â
She had always had a vision of what her classroom would look like, ever since she decided that she wanted to teach. This ideal classroom included filled bookcases, walls covered up and down with art and references to her favorite books and characters, both classic and contemporary. Every person Maya opened her mouth to in the past several months knew just how excited she was about this classroom.Â
Maya was practically itching to talk about it and luckily for her, Nat came in the day that she got the keys to her classroom.Â
She found herself waving Nat down as soon as she walked in through the door. Maya didnât even wait for her to take a seat before opening her mouth. âSo Iâve been hoarding a lot of stuff for the new classroom--âÂ
Nat laughed. âYeah, I helped you pick out more than half of it.âÂ
Maya stopped in her tracks and slapped on a comical pout. âNat⌠You know itâs for the childrenâŚâÂ
âYeah, of course. For the children,â she smiled back to Maya, only pausing to talk to MJ, letting her know she just wanted her usual coffee and pastry.Â
Maya grinned from ear to ear, waiting for Natâs shoulders to square back to herâs. âAnyways! I got my keys today and I was thinking, well-- Now, I know that this is kind of, you know⌠our spot, BUT I was wondering if you were free for the rest of the day? I was thinking, we could, maybe, caffeinate and you could help me move everything into my new classroom, maybe?âÂ
Maya knew asking this was a bit of a longshot, hence all the rambling. It was never verbally spoken, but she knew that Nat, Steve and everyone from Avengersâ tower knew not to make real connections outside of their small circle. And Maya wasnât stupid by any means, she knew that it made sense. She always thought about it long and hard, understanding that getting close to anyone who wasnât super human, anyone that wasnât capable of truly defending themselves was, in a way, selfish of them. Maya continued to make arguments in her head about how Nat wouldnât have let herself get close to her, and that she wouldnât joke about her and Steve if that was really the case. This only confused her more if anything, but nonetheless, she kept her fingers crossed because she genuinely considered Nat to be her friend.Â
Nat paused for a moment, and Maya could see her genuinely weighing out her options as Natâs head tilted back and forth. Then, her head dropped between her shoulders and her hand came up to rub the back of her neck. âYou know what? Yeah. I just had some training scheduled with Steve but moving things is a work out, right? Actually, should I ask him if he wants to help us out?âÂ
Maya exhaled a bit and took a moment to process her answer-- in the end she couldnât help but smile. âYes! Oh my God, thank you! And, yeah, I was going to ask if he could help anyways because I have some heavy furniture that I need to be brought into my classroom. The chair and desk that the school left for me just donât make the cut you know?â She was still rambling, but more so because of her excitement than her anxiety now. âAnd with his help, we can knock it all out sooner! As thanks, maybe I can make you guys dinner tonight? Or another night?âÂ
Her friend couldnât help but laugh a bit at her ability to get so many words out in one breath. Before responding, Nat pulled out her phone. âHold on. Let me call Steve first.âÂ
Nat was on the phone for maybe a minute, only pausing to confirm which school.Â
âMidtown Sci and Tech. Itâs in Queens,â Maya grinned, only getting more and more excited by the minute.Â
Nat nodded, âMidtown Tech⌠Yeah, in Queens⌠Yeah, Iâm sure thatâs fine! Also, steal Happyâs SUV-- thereâs some furniture youâll be moving⌠Awesome, see you in a bit.â Then a click and the phone call ended.Â
âSteve said Buckyâs coming along. I hope you donât mind.âÂ
Mayaâs brain nearly short circuited. Itâs not that she minded but she felt a bit blind sided, especially having only met him once prior for less than the duration of a commercial break.Â
Despite this she reminded herself to smile. âOh! Oh yeah, thatâs fine! I guess I need all the help that I can get.âÂ
MJ called out Natâs name, leaving her coffee and pastry on the counter.Â
Nat stood up and grabbed her order, simultaneously asking, âDo you want to get another coffee before we start loading stuff up? The guys wonât be here for 20 minutes probably. Steve has to choose between two dozen different white t-shirts.âÂ
They both laughed.Â
âNo thanks, we can just head up now. I have a few last minute things to pack before we start loading the cars. Thanks again, Nat. I really do appreciate it.âÂ
âItâs no problem. Lead the way!â And with that, Maya and Nat made their way out of the coffee shop and directly into the door to the left of the cafe entrance, which opened up to a staircase that led directly to Mayaâs front door.Â
--Â
The two girls spent the next 20 minutes packing up the last couple of boxes and were already loading a few into Mayaâs car by the time Steve and Bucky pulled into the spot right behind Mayaâs blue Toyota.Â
âHey, short stack,â Steve greeted Maya, holding the door open for her and Nat to walk back up to the apartment.Â
âSup, gramps,â Maya teased, stepping through the door, closely followed by Nat, then Steve, then Bucky.Â
Once they got up the stairs, it was Maya that held the door open for everyone to file in. As they did, she realized just how small it was. The mere height and broadness of Steve and Bucky made the previously vast space feel tiny very suddenly.Â
The studio was made up of one large rectangle and a door that led to the bathroom.Â
As you walked in through the door, the kitchen appeared to the left. You could only see where it ended distinctly because of the dining table, which was scattered with filing boxes overflowing with books that Maya had been hoarding nearly her entire life.Â
Past the dining table was the entertainment stand, which was really just a short, long bookshelf where she stored her personal books, movies and CD collection. It was also home to a dozen or so personal journals that Maya refused to leave at her parentsâ house out of sheer paranoia.Â
Opposite to the television was an old leather couch and a small, pale wooden coffee table sat in between the two. Both the couch and coffee table were stacked with more books and a few more boxes dedicated to student freebies, desk supplies, as well as classroom decorations. And leaning against the wall were the boxes holding all the unassembled furniture Maya previously made the UPS man haul up the stairs similarly to the way she was going to make Steve and Bucky lug them back down.Â
Just to the right of the television was the door to the bathroom and to the right of that was a massive wooden wardrobe. Across from the wardrobe sat Mayaâs full sized bed, which looked mighty comfortable with the abundance of pillows alongside a questionable amount of stuffed animals for a fully grown and independent woman.Â
The desk was a hybrid nightstand, as it was pressed up against the wall and sandwiched between the bed and the couch. And as for the walls, miscellaneous things were hanging up and a photo collage above the desk was in the works.Â
Maya had to take a moment to understand how her apartment would look from a newcomers perspective for the first time and she grew a little embarrassed. After taking a breath she internally hoped that they wouldnât make any comments about the state of her living space.
Steve and Bucky took this time to look around for themselves.Â
And Steve was quite impressed. âNice set up! Is it just you?âÂ
âYup! Just me! I was thinking about getting a cat or something. I had a lot of pets growing up and just having the company would be really nice.â
A smile was almost immediately slapped across Steveâs face, âOoooohhhh! Thereâs a great adoption place Bucky and I have volunteered at. Itâs not far from here, actually. We can bring you another time, huh Buck?âÂ
Bucky nodded, hands shoved in his pockets, âYeah. We could do that.âÂ
Maya took this moment to finally greet Bucky, âYeah, thatâd be great actually! Also, thank you James, for coming to help.âÂ
Her words were short and sweet because she barely let him get out a nod and a âNo problemâ before giving directions.Â
âOkay, if you guys could take all the big furniture and bigger boxes of books on the couch to the SUV, that would be amazing! Nat and I will handle the rest of the stuff in the kitchen and the smaller boxes on the couch. Then, weâll head to Midtown.âÂ
After brief nods the guys got to work right away and Nat grabbed another one of the boxes cluttering the dining table before making her way downstairs again.Â
It only really took fifteen minutes for the four of them to finish packing up the cars. This mostly had to do with the fact that Bucky and Steve didnât need help lugging boxes of books down the stairs. Nor did they need breaks after several times up and down the stairs, unlike Maya.Â
Once the boxes all trickled out, Maya smiled at the cleaner state of her apartment. After a moment she grabbed the building and classroom keys out of her desk drawer, double checked her bag and did some last minute grabs. Half a dozen locks later, sheâs meeting the other three downstairs by the cars.Â
âYou guys know how to get there right?â Maya asked Steve before thinking long and hard about whether sheâd forgotten anything.Â
He nodded before pushing the button to close the trunk to the SUV. âYeah, Iâm pretty sure. Weâll be right behind you anyways.âÂ
âAw, no racing?â Nat taunts him.Â
âNot like you stand a chance,â Bucky retorts.Â
âIs that so, James?â Maya asks, mostly joking. She realizes, quickly though, that her competitive side is what gives her the courage to speak to Bucky in such a tone.Â
âItâs not even a question, sweetheart.â Bucky laughs, before patting the top of her carâs hood. âLetâs just get a move on, yeah?âÂ
âThey just know they would have lost,â Nat sneers before climbing into the passenger seat of Mayaâs car.Â
--Â
Itâs on the drive there that Nat directly asks Maya about her potential relationship with Steve: âAre you sure? You wouldnât even give poor Stevie a chance?âÂ
Maya canât help but blush in response. âItâs not Steve. I would be interested, yeah but-- I donât know. I donât feel anything romantic for Steve for whatever reason. I mean, heâs great! And I love being around him, but I just feel like heâs a great best friend, good brother type. You know?âÂ
Nat huffed a bit. âI just think that you guys would be great together. You already get along so well and have a lot in common. It just feels really obvious to me.âÂ
âSometimes the obvious path isnât always the right one.âÂ
âDid you just quote a Pixar film to me?âÂ
âNat you realize that you didnât even skip a beat; you knew exactly what I was quoting.âÂ
âOh hush, Steveâs the one that made me watch it!âÂ
âIn any case, donât get your hopes up. OR Steveâs! I donât want things to be weird with him just because you think weâre cute together.âÂ
Nat canât help but roll her eyes. âJust keep an open mind, yeah?âÂ
Maya presses her lips together and nods. âOf course.âÂ
he knew nat didnât mean anything by the nickname, but it brought back memories he wished so badly to forget. qâs pantsuits were a part of her, one of her defining traits really. he just as much fell in love with them as he had fallen in love with her.Â
