Ronald Gasser will spend the next 30 years behind bars for shooting former NFL star Joe McKnight.
On December 1, 2016, Ronald Gasser (who is white) shot 28-year-old unarmed African-American Joe McKnight dead in the street. Eyewitnesses reported seeing an angry “yelling man” and a second man who was trying to apologize to him. The yelling man then shot the apologizing man multiple times, and then stood over his victim’s body, announced, ”I told you don’t fuck with me!” and shot him again.
Louisiana has a “stand your ground” law, which Gasser claimed as his defense. The police originally released Gasser without charges, but after Gasser admitted pursuing McKnight’s vehicle off the freeway in an incident of “road rage” after McKnight accidentally cut him off in traffic, they reconsidered and charged him with manslaughter. A jury ultimately rejected Gasser’s self-defense claim, and he was convicted.
So that’s what can happen when a white man shoots and kills an unarmed black man--even when the white man claims he feared for his life--just as long as (a) the black man is a famous former NFL player, and (b) the white man isn’t a police officer.
