“You on shift all night?” Cass enquired idly as he put down his empty glass, wondering silently if he actually wanted to get drunk a third night in a row, considering the monster hangover he’d woken up with - the one which had him questioning, as usual, all blurry events of the night before. (He’d probably made mistakes, but that was relatively normal, and besides. He’d never really been bothered by them enough to stop.) But he was at the Den anyway and he figured he might as well since that was his whole reason coming, and the place was quiet, giving him more time to most probably annoy Maya, who he offered a sunny smile to as he slid the glass over to her. “Quiet night? Don’t suppose you’ll give me a discount for entertaining you? Or for being otherwise adorable?”

It actually wasn't often that Natsuki made sweets in her kitchen, especially not the more traditional sort of desserts one might immediately think of when they thought up delicious and sugary nibbles. Her specialty lied in soba noodles or other such dishes which required the long process of boiling broth down from a culmination of ingredients to deliver a complex and savoury soup, a recipe she'd learned from her parents who had learned from theirs and so on and so forth. Of course, her restaurant didn't only serve soba noodles but it was one of the many featured items and she was always experimenting and looking to explore and expand her menu in new and interesting ways to appeal to her patrons and took every opportunity to learn from others more knowledgeable than herself so when she had learned through her brief period of time of knowing Maya that she was proficient in baking, Natsuki jumped at the opportunity to ask her to teach her how to make what was considered to be an American staple: an apple pie.
So on an off day when her restaurant was closed, because even if they decided to use the kitchen before the restaurant was meant to open it would be busy with all the prep work which took place in the very early hours of the day, Natsuki invited Maya over and was brewing some matcha for them to enjoy during their time. The water thusly boiled and the young witch mindfully began her pour, swirling hot water in a circular motion into the appropriate cup before she stopped and with the bamboo whisk briskly mixed the matcha powder into the water until it was sufficiently integrated, it would need another pour of water to top off before she could move onto preparing the second cup, in the meantime she chatted to Maya in a quiet but pleasant voice, "I went to the farmer's market to buy the apples. I was assured they would be perfect for baking into a pie." Finished with the first cup she passed it over to Maya and started the same procedure on a cup for herself, "Thank you again for helping me. Last time I tried to bake an apple pie I couldn't get the pastry right. It was just soggy inside."
As comfortable as the cheap motel had been, it was a place to crawl to at the end of the day and not hide out in all day. Dahlia was learning slowly her way around the town of Opulence, a place that was dubbed with a seemingly normal atmosphere, though it was anything but normal to the young woman. Fear had often been her go to resort for years now, but she had managed to come out of that shell only to be mocked and shunned for it. This was why this place was something she held with pride, something that finally felt like home, and thus got her motivated enough to actually begin to explore all of what was out there for her. Perhaps meeting people would make things less intimidating, and at the shops, she tried conversing with quite a few people with no such luck. Down on herself, Dahlia continued forth, following shop after shop, until she ended up in a rather odd shop, one that seemed to hold some sort of ingredients to her. Perusing the shelves lined with things, she finally spotted another person to try and start something with, gaining courage and opening with the only thing she could rely on, her lack of knowledge of magic, “This place has everything you’d think you’d ever need to put into a cauldron and mix some sort of potion.”

Ben hadn’t been back in town long, but he quickly fell back into his rhythm of walking to the cafe and getting his coffee every morning. Walking into the cafe he got his black coffee before turning around and seeing a familiar face. “Hi, it’s Maya right?” He asked as he stepped forward, of course he remembered but he was trying to play it down just in case she hadn’t remembered him. “How are you today?”

carrion bolt…biological son of ryden bolt and maya bolt, married…he likes ryden more…takes after maya…is a werewolf…is not a fan of his red hair…can bake quite well…starts more fights than he finishes
Carrion sat at the pack meeting in the Den, watching as his father, not looking nearly old enough to be with his werewolf metabolism, spoke proudly of that evening’s task. People always told him his father had been a leader, but that it had shaped itself truly over time. They insisted for a long while he was as reckless as himself. The thought having Carrion drop his eyes to the knuckles on his hand, bloody from the beating he’d given some other werewolves at school. He was an alpha’s soon, presumably untouchable but in reality a target.
The speech fell away, and all clapped, his mother nudging him, looking older than his father even though she was younger. Giving up her magic had never been an option but her youth did help make his slow aging less evident now. “One day that’ll be you,” Maya told him, pride in her tone that in her youth had only been reserved for her baked goods. Carrion was not so confident, and he didn’t quite want to be.
“Or maybe I’m a loner, like you,” he pointed out of the covenless witch. She’d found her place among the werewolves and maybe Carrion would find his place among humans, or witches. He’d shown promise when he was young, able to help his mother with simple spells. But once puberty came his magic fell away and he was left with the curse passed to him from his father. Resentment was not quite it, he didn’t blame his Dad but he did feel anger that he’d lost something he loved in favour of being someone he wasn’t sure he was. Anger was his outlet.
Maya frowned, eyes averting as Ryden walked up, looking his son over. The potential jawline, and the possibility of more mass, did indicate their relation but mostly when Ryden saw his son he saw Maya, especially when he fought, catching sight of his bloody knuckles. Like his mother he’d attack anything that he thought might have wrong him because the world had.
“He doesn’t have to be alpha, love,” Ryden said to his wife, placing a large hand on her small shoulder. “He’ll always be someone to us.”
Whenever he had free time, which less face it he didn’t have a lot of, Ben enjoyed playing video games, or if the weather was nice, being outside. He love running and hiking and how it helped clear his mind, and just made him feel better in general. Today he was trying out a new trail, holding out a proper paper map as he walked along he was so distracted by folding it up and putting it in his pocket that he didn’t look up until last second when he was colliding with another body. His hands instinctively shot out to the person to help steady them if needed. “Shit, my bad." He stood back after a second and shook his head, “I’m sorry I should’ve been paying more attention. Are you okay?”
sammie harding…biological daughter of kemper harding and maya parker, divorced…she likes maya more…takes after neither…is a witch…formed her own coven in high school…works at coven’s cottage with her inspiration colette…is terrible at baking
Kemper pulled up in front of his exes bakery, her apartment over it, and looked back at his daughter who had her headphones in and was flipping through the grimoire she had, to him it looked like the burn book in Mean Girls the way it was put together and coloured, covered in glitter and markered writing. Witches had certainly changed, the younger generation seemed to have turned it into something completely new that even his ex seemed unable to understand.
“Hey,” he said, Sammie still flicking through the book with nails covered in glitter moons. “Hey!” he said louder, the girl finally pulling headphones from her ears and looking up at her father with a frown on her face.
“Mum’s not even down yet,” she said, having clearly heard him over the music but choosing to ignore him. Kemper wished he knew how to connect with Sammie, but both he and Maya seemed quite unable to reach the girl since she had formed her coven, a new family, one that wouldn’t separate on her, one she could control. It wasn’t like she hated them, she still helped her mother by using her magic to hide her gray hairs, and she still made her dad breakfast because he’d never learnt to cook, but she’d closed a lot of herself off from them.
Kemper let out a sigh, rubbing his brows just as Maya came out of the bakery, flour on her shirt and hair up in a messy bun. It was her week to have Sammie since it was a witches holiday, hopeful that she could convince her daughter to spend it with her and not with her coven of teen witches at Coven’s Cottage, that had, through Sammie, because a young witch hang out spot, even having a few tables and chairs out front now.
“Bye, Dad,” she said, grabbing the school bad she had and shoving the grimoire in it. “Have fun on your date,” Sammie teased as she leaned through the front seats and pressed a kiss to her Dad’s cheeks. Kemper felt sticky gloss stain it and once more let out a sigh. With Sammie heading off inside he rolled down his window to talk to Maya, looking at her with hands on the steering wheel, car engine still going.
“Did she finish her paper?” Maya asked him and Kemper nodded his head gently, placing a soft hand on Maya’s that rested on the frame of his door’s window. He missed her sometimes, missed the help mostly, but her too, the way her hair was up in that bun and he’d feel it knocking against his chest. “She’s going to go off, she won’t spend it with me,” Maya confessed of the holiday, not having anyone else who would understand what dealing with Sammie could be like.
Kemper squeezed Maya’s hand, “give her a chance, maybe invite the coven here. Baked good are certainly better than herbs hanging everywhere.” It was meant to be comforting and Kemper heard her half laugh as she pulled herself together, and backed away from the window. They didn’t say goodbye much anymore, too accustomed to old habits with ‘I love yous’ and kisses to fall into anything else, so saying nothing was better.
Maya pushed the door open, watching as her daughter was already eating a donut with her phone in her free hand. “Hey, Vi says they’re a party tonight in Ashmore,” Sammie told her Mother as she continued to look down at her phone. “I was thinking you could drive me and the girls, and then come pick us up after so we don’t drink and drive.” Finally her eyes lifted to Maya’s, their shade just like Maya’s own.
“If you stay for the holidays,” Maya responded, one of her brows rising as she watched Sammie sigh the way her Dad did. “It’s a few hours, Sammie,” she continued to insist to her daughter. “Party there, holiday here, deals a deal.”
“Fine,” Sammie said, pushing past Maya to head upstairs. At least Maya’d get the holiday with her daughter.
