[an AU set in WWII, where Maya is a nurse and Valentina is a genderbent (!) soldier just returning to the infirmary from fighting for his country.]
Lights were flashing in, what seemed to be, regular spacing in front of his eyes whenever they would flicker open, and he tried to keep repeating the same phrases in his head over and over again. Stay awake. Keep your eye open. There had been a few situations in which he had gone through this procedure, but none of them must have been quite as bad as this. He would have welcomed to be able to turn his head to catch a glimpse of his surroundings, but all he sensed were those damned lights that kept blinding him. The people running around him weren't visible but audible to him, telling him things he didn't understand, partly because their voices were muffled by the pounding in his ears, partly because when in a condition like this, he was more likely to shift into italian. He would have liked to lift up a hand to run it across his face and wipe away the sweaty feeling that laid on his forehead, but his muscles were stiffened and his arms heavy. Stay awake.
What had happened? Last he could remember, he was in the field, on battleground - was it over? The thought just quickly crossed his mind and felt like a fevered dream. It was rather a shame he was still heaving through his roughened, slow-working lungs. It was wonderous they still worked, or was it? His eyes more closed than open now, Valentino sighed, but to his surprise it came out more as a groan, an incredibly pained groan, the sound of it making him flinch. Hell, when would somebody come and sedate this mess that he was so he could finally- ... finally sleep ...
William was a fighter. Come hell and high water, he had never run away from anything. And surely - no - he would not back down now. What the hell had happened that he was so extradited to these people swirlign around him, and just when he caught an edge of what he believed to be a piece of white clothing dangling over him, a stethoscope, fast fingers, he allowed himself to close his eyes for once. The infirmary. Maybe you don't have to stay awake, take a little nap right now, just a quick one ...
