Comic Legends: The Racy Wolverine Cover That Got Past Marvel Editorial
Todayâs CBR article by Brian Cronin
âThe sixth issue of the Wolverine ongoing that launched in 2003 was a great issue. Written by Greg Rucka and drawn by Darick Robertson and Tom Palmer, it showed Wolverine sharing a drink with his old friend, Nightcrawler, in the wake of the traumatic experience that Wolverine went through in the opening arc of Rucka and Robertsonâs series. Itâs a touching examination of the power of friendship. Top notch work from Rucka and Robertson. Hereâs the funny thing, though. Check out the cover by superstar comic book painter Esab Ribic (who drew Secret Wars in 2015), who had only begun to work for Marvel in 2001 when he filled in for Paul Smith on the back-end of Joe Caseyâs X-Men: Children of the Atom.â
âRecently, I did a list about 15 comic book covers that surprisingly made it past the censors. This cover would definitely belong along those other covers featured.
Now, you might say, âOkay, Brian, I get it, the beer bottle is an erection. However, are you sure youâre not just reading into this cover?â Thatâs a fair question to ask. A couple of years back, Allie from Maxmioffed posted the cover image in question and wrote,Â
âKurtâs clearly naked Loganâs glaring at his dick Classic porn cover poses @Esad Ribic explain yourself pleaseâ
The great Jill Pantozzi then re-posted it and added,
âwhen what whenâ
Greg Rucka then re-posted Jillâs re-post and added the following,
âAlso please note the placement of the beer bottle. I once was at a show where I asked Esad about this cover. Esad is a big, cheerful, man with a wicked sense of humor. He just looked at me. And then he smiled. And the smile got bigger. And bigger. And he said, âAnd nobody at Marvel noticed!â And then he couldnât stop laughing.â Thatâs hilarious.
So, yeah, it was intentional. Thatâs awesome. I love that Axel Alonso (editor on the series) approved the cover.
Thanks to my pal Jude D. for suggesting this one! Rich Johnston wrote about this in the past. (BleedingCool: Esad Ribicâs Gay Porn Wolverine Cover That Marvel Never Noticed)â CBR
@maxximoffed your post is still famous :D And I canât believe that the writer himself confirmed it! :âDDD

Commission by the gracious @maxximoffed ! continuing the underground ongoing kitty-ship wars.
Hereâs a thing that happened to one of my friends. I was there.
Basically, we were walking down the sidewalk, talking about something meaningless. I think it had to do with a movie. Then this bus screeches up, stops next to us, and a bunch of people with âDown with Humanâ shirts climbed out and started beating him up. I was punched and kicked a bit too, but I managed to avoid brutalization by going for their faces. After figuring out whatâs happening, I started attacking them back, getting them off of him. He was quite injured but I called 911 and he made a full recovery at the hospital. I was fine, with only a cut on my arm that they patched up.
