You just wanted to go home.
You wanted to be back at your room, probably feet hanging off the bed — your walkman blasting off on your latest cassette of Bon Jovi, Nirvana, and The Beatles — eyes staring up at the ceiling while you silently prayed you'd either do well on your chemistry quiz or your hockey practice.
Now, you were stuck inside the familiar Starcourt Mall, all crammed up against a grocery store with the glass door all smashed up, still too shocked wondering what the fuck just happened in the last thirty minutes.
In the first place, you weren't even supposed to be here — your Mom had called you after your hockey practice, all pissed about your brother, Steve because he apparently hadn't answered any of the calls your parents did. Your first initial thought was that he was just with Robin — the familiar blonde server who he works alongside at Scoops Ahoy — the ice cream shop at the mall.
Now, it was nighttime and he still hadn't answered any of the call you dialed, and the mall was suddenly closed up due to a "repairment issue". But you — being the rebel you always were, had sneaked in to the mall.
Now, you were stuck with your brother, alongside with Robin, Mike, Lucas, Will, Dustin — the familiar group who always played D&D like there was no tomorrow — Erica who was Lucas' sister, Mrs. Byers, Hopper, and the girl with this supernatural power called Eleven, Nancy, Jonathan, Murray — and most importantly, Max.
You didn't even know she was here — you were just as shocked when you saw the familiar red-haired girl in the distance — just like how you've always seen it whenever you saw her skate after school while you were waiting for the bus at the stop to take you to your hockey practice.
You've always admired of how cool she was — always being on her skateboard, or how she sometimes walked to school with her walkman on like she didn't give a single care about the world. You admired her cool persona, and she was just this outgoing girl — friendly yet fiercely independent at the same time.
And most importantly, you admired her because she didn't make fun of you back then like what the others did. You always did wear boyish outfits, and you were teased about it a lot. But Max meanwhile, always had remained kind when the group had hung out back at your house — and how polite she was to you after Steve had revealed he had a younger sister.
Now, you were scanning up the grocery isle — looking around for bandages, cotton, and soap like what Max had instructed. Eleven was severely injured, and they needed to clean and disinfect the wound. Gathering the supplies needed along with some mineral water bottles, you went back to them.
Carefully dropping the supplies beside Max, you spoke. "Here," you replied as you watched Max carefully clean the wounds Eleven had. You carefully stayed beside her, being an unexpected assistant.
Leaning against the isle of supplies, you hugged your knees closer to your chest — both of you alone after Max decided it'll be better for Mike and Eleven to be alone to themselves, her muttering about Mike finally being 'a man' — you following her. Now, you carefully avoided her gaze, feeling heat rise up to your nape.
"You were really cool back there." you suddenly blurted out, "I mean- you knew how to treat injuries the proper way — that's... that's really cool." you added, feeling heat curl up against your neck.
Max only snorted, fumbling with her shoelaces as she smiled. "Trust me, my injuries were almost as pretty bad like El had." she said, which made you smile.
"That must've sucked." you replied, scratching your nape.
"Totally sucked." she confirmed, "But you know what also sucks?" she said, pausing. "We might actually burn this mall down tonight."
"Yeah." you said, voice quiet. You quietly looked at her, who was beside you — scooting closer. "Hey, uhm — I know this sucks, but... there's this record store downtown." you began to speak. If this was really her last night? She was gonna shoot her fucking shot.
"I thought you'd wanna.... come with me? Like, pick all those music records and stuff." you muttered, now staring into the ground like you suddenly found it interesting. "It's totally fine if you like — don't want to come with me— which is I totally, like — really understand—" she rambled, but Max only cut her off with a quiet smile.
"I'll.... think about it." she said with that smile with her eyes all crinkly, laced with amusement that made your stomach do those little flip-flops.
That response made you look up at her, the red- haired already staring back at you as you quietly nodded. "Y-Yeah. Cool." you smiled quietly, fumbling with your flannel. "I'll wait for your answer."

Now, you were actually gasping for air as Billy tried to cut off air going through as he tightened his hold against your throat. Beside you was Eleven, still passed out as you weakly tried to push him away.
He wasn't even recognizable anymore, those black lines all throughout his head and neck that basically looked like it was going to pop at any second — his grip that was so goddamn tight you can feel your vision starting to form black, blurry dots on them.
You knew you weren't even part of the plan of being the target by the monster, you just happened to be all running down between the passages of the small when Billy had located the four of you, with you being the first one knocked down after he was going to hit Max, and you took the hit.
The monster was now in front of you — The Mind Flayer, as they called it. Four, disgusting legs all propped up against the tiles of the mall floor as its mouth were open — as if proudly showing its sharp teeth as a long of what sort of looked like its tongue, had four, sharp corners slowly reached out to you.
God, were you really going to die? You can already feel your lungs slowly starting to not function as Billy's hand only continued to grow tight on you.
As you laid on the cold tile floor of the mall, all you can think was about the upcoming Nationals, your upcoming chemistry exam that was actually worth more than half of your grade, your friends back at the rink — and the familiar red- haired girl who glowed underneath the gaze of sunlight against her skin.
Suddenly, you were gasping back for air as soon as you heard the ringing sounds of fireworks being thrown against the Meat Monster, the entity backing off as if in pain — while Billy also stumbled back as if he was in pain.
You suddenly sat up, gasping for air as you saw the sparkling fireworks being thrown. Your eyes gazing through Eleven who was still unconscious, crawling as you shook her awake.
A sudden force knocked you a bit far away from Eleven, with Billy only staring at you — eyes all distant as you groaned out in pain, you eyes all blurry as Eleven was now being strangled by Billy.
You weakly got up, still trying to push Billy off as he just pushed you — with you collapsing back at the ground as you now laid beside Eleven, your muscles now all aching, blood running down your cheeks as you can only look as Eleven seemed to now say something to him — words you couldn't even understand now that your ear was ringing out.
Minutes only seemed to pass when you saw Billy, now standing up and looking at The Mind Flayer, with Max and Mike running into the mall center just in time for Billy to physically stop the Meat Monster using his arms, its little gills appearing by the side and attaching itself to his abdomen as Max screamed. It finally went through his stomach, making fall to the ground.
It all just happened in just seconds, something underground exploding before the monster stumbled by the side, before being knocked down mysteriously, falling also down the ground.
You weakly got up, watching as Max looked so distraught by the sight of her brother laying there, weakly choking in his breaths as she kneeled by his side.
"Billy, Billy — wake up."
Max gently shook him, watching as the very life drained out from his eyes, his body going still as his eyes remained awake.
"Billy, Billy — wake up —" Max repeated as you hesitantly kneeled beside her, a hand on your side that was still severely aching. "Max..." you quietly said, as she collapsed against you, quiet sobs escaping through her lips.
You immediately wrapped your arms around her, rubbing her back. "Hey, it's okay — it's going to be okay." you said as you continued to whisper reassurances that felt hollow as you continued to look at Billy, who was now laying dead as he laid on the ground.
The military forces had then evacuated you outside the mall, helicopters flying around the area as fire trucks also started to come in as the fire had started deep inside a mall.
You were inside of some van, blankets wrapped against both of your shoulders as you only looked at Max, whose gaze was distant ever since you got out.
"Hey," you whispered to her, voice quiet and soft as if she was some scared animal. "It's going to be okay." you repeated, your hand hesitantly wrapping against hers.
Max only looked at you, before leaning her head against your shoulder as you tensed, forcing yourself to relax.
Everything may seem too fucked up right now, but you knew you'll stay with her until everything seemed right again.
