Max Bruch (1838-1920) composed three Symphonies, all of which are excellent. I have chosen his Symphony #2 in f- from 1870. The second orchestral work by Bruch is his Suite on Russian Folk Melodies Op. 79b from 1905. It is based on a collection of Songs and Dances for Violin and Piano Op. 79, composed in 1903. String Quartets by Max Bruch (1838-1920) and Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884)
Bruch and Smetana are known and respected, but are not considered among the top tier of 19th century composers, according to the powers that be. If you are not familiar with the string quartets by these composers, they are definitely worth a listen. Bruch's String Quartet #1 is an early work dating from 1858. Smetana's autobiographical String Quartet #1 "From My Life" dates from 1876. Next week my topic will be orchestral works by Bruch.
