Really pleased to get to attend Maurice Manning’s recent reading at East Tennessee State University. He read numerous poems and accompanied them with some picking and song. Lots of laughter and humor mixed with startling powerful lines in each work. Sometimes you get lucky. Found this for a measly $4 this week, a book I’ve hunted a bit but not found the right one until now. Maurice Manning’s poems are always interesting and I appreciate his willingness to venture into dialect. I hadn’t read much of his work until a few months ago, but his poem “One View of Time” struck a chord. I’ve posted the poem “A Dream of Ash and Soot” here, a powerful and succinct narrative piece. This is his first book, winner of the Yale Young Poets Award, and blurbed by the late W. S. Merwin. Rare in hardcover, even rarer in Fine condition. Maurice Manning is slowly becoming a favorite of mine, and I think his language reminds me a bit of Berry. Very clear images. Check out his short poem “A Study of Heft” I’ve posted at the end. As of 3:30 today, my comprehensive exams for my MA are finished. Now waiting for the results. What a strange spot to be in, waiting to see if my career will need total re-evaluation, or I can continue on this course. I guess I’ll know soon!
