Defining Batman’s religion has been debatable due to the incongruence of Batman artists and writers through the Caped Crusader’s past 78 years. An exclamation of “My God!” or “God in heaven!” is translated into merely an expression; many, based on his mastery of all sciences, detective persona and exposure to the supernatural, believe he is considered an atheist or an agnostic. But when you examine Bruce Wayne and Batman’s evolution over the last seven decades, you observe actions such as prayer, exposure to other cultures and, in a morbid sense, the type of imagery used to adorn his family or other allies’ gravestones (Matt Wagner cover to Batman 639 presented). In the end, Batman’s religion is decided upon which comic you read and media you watch but nevertheless Batman’s relationship with God or a higher power is a topic worth noting. For our next history session “Batman and Religion: A History”, we will highlight stories that give us a glimpse of the Dark Knight’s religious preference, many times reflecting the real life era, the writer or both, and what this reveals about Bruce’s inner demons and struggles of being the Batman. We’ll begin this session soon, so stay tuned for more History of the Batman! ✌🏼💙🦇🙏🏼
