In which Senku calls in a weapons expert to make the fighting crew something custom suited to them.
Reader is ββ Gender Neutral | Weaponsmith
Story is ββ Platonic | Headcanons
Warnings | N/A
Hyoga
β¦ ββ He doesn't enjoy allowing strangers to handle his main weapon, let alone for several hours so they can 'fix' it. It worked; what more could it possibly need?
β¦ ββ You weren't the average weaponsmith, though. You took one look at the weapon, then him, and took off to your little work area.
β¦ ββ That same evening you interrupted his training session with the other fighters by tossing the newly made kudayari his way, which he gracefully took into his next mock fight with Moz.
β¦ ββ Already he could feel the difference. This time the Kuda was made of metal, or more specifically metal plating around bamboo, which kept it light. The shaft was properly treated wood, the sturdy kind coated in something water-resistant.
β¦ ββ The craftsmanship is impressive; even the blade had Damascus steel patterning along its sharpest edge to look like jagged rocks. You most certainly did a proper job.
β¦ ββ Okay, consider his attention gotten. After training he'll certainly compliment you on such a proper display of weaponsmithing. He won't say it, but he is thoroughly impressed that you got every aspect correct, even his ideal length, weight, and shape of the blade.
β¦ ββ It's treasured. Before he didn't mind if his kudayari got chipped or broken because it could be replaced, but now it was something precious. It was the start of something of a friendship between the two of you.
Kohaku
β¦ ββ With you revived, it was about time someone fixed the half-assed shield Senku had reinforced for her. Besides, it could be made a lot stronger.
β¦ ββ The wood was horribly splintered, the paint was chipped, and the reinforcements were lousy. If it weren't sentimental, you'd have restarted the project from scratch.
β¦ ββ Kohaku watches you work, partially because she's interested in how her shield will be reinforced (and thus use its advantage points more) and because she hardly trusts you yet.
β¦ ββ Shows genuine interest in your craft: Why are you drilling rods throughout it? Why are you sanding it? Why reinforce the straps? So long as you're willing to answer her, she'll ask more.
β¦ ββ Even better if you let her get involved, be that letting her paint the outside herself or treat the leather for the straps; she feels a sense of pride learning a new art and getting to say she helped!
β¦ ββ Once it's done, she always visits you to have adjustments or repairs made, though the quality prevents it from getting in bad shape too often.
β¦ ββ And of course Kohaku tells anyone who asks that you made it. She knows being new to so many people can make it hard to make friends, especially when you're so busy, so she's sure to put in a good word for you with everyone.
Matsukaze
β¦ ββ With his original weapon lost to time and his stick broken by Tsukasa, Matsukaze had nothing but a bamboo practice sword to defend himself with.
β¦ ββ Naturally that wouldn't work as proper defence for a genuine fighter, so Senku called you in to make him something proper. After watching him fight, you decided on what'd suit him best: a Tachi blade.
β¦ ββ The stronger curve would make it harder to break, and the thicker metal would help with that, too. It was also longer, which would help his reach against the many spear users.
β¦ ββ Once Matsukaze knows you'll be working so hard to get him a weapon, he will be at your side when possible to support you. He brings tea in the morning and your meals when you miss them due to work.
β¦ ββ He isn't certain he can keep up with what it is you're doing, so he prefers to watch in silence and nod anytime you update him on the process.
β¦ ββ Before petrification, he knew of weaponsmiths, but they typically worked with stone to chisel sharp edges. Seeing you heat and fold metal continuously for hours on end was a complete step up in dedication to the art.
β¦ ββ His favourite part is the braiding on the hilt you did using fabric similar to what he wore and the crescent-moon guard you polished just for him. Those personal touches won't be forgotten, and he reminds himself of your hard work anytime he fights.
Moz
β¦ ββ Why on earth would he ever let some non-fighting stranger touch his armour? Whether Senku trusts you or not doesn't change the fact that he doesn't want you touching him.
β¦ ββ So of course you 'have' to prove yourself, at the request of your kinder peers, to fix up a spear for him first so he can be sure he can trust your abilities.
β¦ ββ Except he's a primitive fool who's never seen the talents of a modern-century weaponsmith. As much as you'd rather not waste time making something nice for that asshole, you refuse to put out sub-par work.
β¦ ββ But seeing him light up at the sturdy spear custom-made to his grip and height so easily, as if he never dismissed you in the first place, made it somewhat worthwhile.
β¦ ββ You've earned his trust, so he'll let you work on fixing his prized armour so long as he can keep guard. Only, his attention span sucks, so he's not really watching much of anything.
β¦ ββ Even so, he'll be extra protective while you're working on his stuff and keep everyone away from you so you can 'concentrate.' Though he talks so loud when it's just the two of you that he's hardly helping.
β¦ ββ The swirling details you add to the edges of his armour are enough to win him over, not even counting the perfect polish and reinforcement done. Sure, he'll tolerate his new favourite weaponsmith.
Tsukasa
β¦ ββ He's certainly used weapons before, but he was most acquainted with his fists. Still, most of the dangers he faced held weapons, and so he would need one too.
β¦ ββ Designing something as sturdy as him is a daunting task, but Tsukasa is willing to fetch the materials for you and help you with design so long as you're offering your expertise to him.
β¦ ββ Though not exactly a traditional weapon, you decide on a double-sided buster sword, which would require a thick grip (allowing for more force to be put on it) and could act as a shield in dire situations.
β¦ ββ Tsukasa finds you the hardest wood he can for the handle, and you reinforce it with a metal rod that's welded to each blade to prevent it from breaking apart. If the wood breaks, you can always replace it and save the blade.
β¦ ββ It's so heavy you can barely lift it, and once you've finished sharpening its blade edges, Tsukasa has to help you, or else you risk cutting a limb off.
β¦ ββ Rather than treating the wood handle, you used a wide bleached leather strip to cushion the grip. Even if his hands are covered in calluses, with a weapon so heavy it'd likely hurt to handle barehanded without some kind of protective layer.
β¦ ββ Tsukasa will leave you to your work when you don't need help, but when you are done, he is extremely pleased with the finished product. He'll request you watch him train and point him to its best uses.
Ukyo
β¦ ββ The first bow he made himself, along with all the arrows. It works just fine, since he learned to do it pre-petrification, but he could certainly use an upgrade if you're offering.
β¦ ββ Instead of the shortbow he was using, you manage to design a recursive bow, which allows for faster speed and harder blows.
β¦ ββ Ukyo gives you full say in how or what you make him, but he'd like to watch if you allow him. He's mostly silent, only commenting when you ask for his opinion on length, grip, colour, and so forth.
β¦ ββ If there's extra beaver tail leather from a previous hunt, he'd request you use it on the handle for grip; he'll help treat it while you're busy with the bow. He loves seeing how carefully you wrap the handle, each layer perfectly even and spaced.
β¦ ββ While feathers are effective fletchings, they can be more unpredictable than the modern plastic ones. So you take the time to make something of a 'cookie' cutter that can cut them out of plastic sheets.
β¦ ββ Since you have the cutter for the fletchings now, you make a bunch of extras for him so he can make new arrows or replace broken ones as needed.
β¦ ββ Your thoughtfulness in making him extras, upgrading his bow design, and making him proper fletchlings does not go unnoticed! You're considered a good friend by Ukyo, and he likes to stop by your workshop just to chat now.
Authors Note | I love the fighting crew so much wahhh, this idea popped straight into my head! Theres romantic potential here too,,, but I can always write that another time
