The Moon Man (2012) - it's a French movie that's about a moon man who get out of his comfort zone to make friends. It's also based off of a book. The Moon Man looks, sounds and acts like a MSOJA character and i love that about him he's so cuteeee

Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror (2009) - This CG-animated movie is about a girl going to an island filled with many people's childhood objects to find the mirror her mom gave her when she was a kid. There's a vibe in this that feels like MSOJA was mixed with LittleBigPlanet to make this movie (loved that game so much as a kid)

Kaiba (2008) - This Musaaki Yuasa anime is freaky, strange, emotional, dramatic and very post-apocalyptic. It's about a boy named Kaiba (i thought that Kaiba was a girl at first 🫠) who loses his memories and has to go find them. A lot of the characters switch each other's bodies every other episode and there's a storyline about a relationship that ended very horribly (again, i thought that Kaiba was a girl at first and that he was a lesbian) and it feels more MSOJA-esque than it should be. Also Popo is voiced by Kid Irabu's seiyuu (we'll get to Irabu in another post) and Boron's seiyuu is in this and that is more of a whiplash than it should be

A Tree of Palme (2002) - Speaking of post-apocalyptic, this movie is HORRIFYING and sad. Basically a steampunk version of Pinocchio. It released before MSOJA so idk about it being similar to it but there are SOME inspirations in there. There's also a character named Popo but it's not the same character as Popo from Kaiba

Moomins (1945-Present Day (ongoing franchise)) - This is an ongoing franchise and with the new Rebecca Sugar movie coming out sooner or later, i should talk about how some of these Moomin characters went on to become inspirations for a LOT of Masudaverse characters. The 60s Moomin anime was made by Zuiyo (the producer studio behind Popee) and Boron's seiyuu (Tessho Genda) was in the 90s anime as the Hobgoblin and there's a character in green (Snufkin and Stain). There's also a cozy vibe that meshes with the absolute chaos that goes on and that implies to MSOJA as well
