09. mask off
the campus is louder than it should be for a weekday afternoon. raised voices, cleats scraping against concrete, the distant thud of a ball hitting netting over and over again. youâre weaving through the quad with your tote bag bumping against your hip when you nearly run straight into someone dressed like theyâre actively trying not to be seen.Â
black hoodie.Â
disposable face mask.Â
cap pulled low enough to shadow his eyes.Â
âoh, sorry,â you mumble automatically, already stepping around him.Â
then you stop. because some instincts donât ask permission.Â
you turn back slowly, eyes narrowing just a fraction.Â
itâs the eyes.Â
green. sharp. cold. familiar in a way that makes your chest tighten before you understand why.Â
your mouth betrays you before your brain can catch up.Â
ârinâ?âÂ
the man stiffens.Â
for a second, nothing happens. then he exhales through his nose, almost amused, and lifts his head. his gaze meets yours, and the resemblance hits you fully this time. the same cutting intensity, the same almost arrogant calm.Â
he reaches up and tugs the mask down just enough to reveal a smirk that does not belong to rin.Â
âwrong itoshi.â Â
your breath catches.Â
â⊠sae?âÂ
his brow lifts. impressed. âyou noticed.âÂ
âyou have the same eyes,â you say before you can stop yourself. then quieter, âitâs kind of unfair.âÂ
sae lets out a short laugh, the sound low and easy. âpeople usually donât catch that. not unless theyâre paying attention.âÂ
he adjusts the mask back over his mouth, but leaves it loose, clearly unconcerned. âyou heading somewhere?âÂ
âlibrary,â you say automatically. then hesitate. your eyes drift past him, toward the field you can now clearly hear. âare youâŠ?âÂ
ârinâs practice,â he confirms. âlast day in japan. figured iâd watch before i leave.âÂ
oh. that lands heavier than you expect.Â
you glance toward the field again. you should go. you were going to. you donât want to hover, donât want to feel like youâre intruding on something that already feels complicated.Â
âi was just passing through,â you say, already shifting your bag higher on your shoulder.Â
sae watches you carefully. âyou donât have to.âÂ
you meet his gaze. hesitate.Â
â⊠just for a bit,â you admit.Â
the walk to the field is unhurried. sae keeps his hood up, hands in his pockets, moving with the casual confidence of someone used to being stared at. a few students glance his way, whispering, nudging each other, but no one approaches.Â
ârin doesnât talk much,â sae says suddenly, like heâs commenting on the weather.Â
you huff softly. âthatâs putting it lightly.âÂ
âhe used to,â sae adds. âwhen we were younger.âÂ
that makes your steps falter. âreally?âÂ
âyeah.â sae glances at you. ânot to everyone. but he wasnât always like this.âÂ
you file that away carefully, like something fragile youâre not meant to touch too hard.Â
theyâre already practicing when you arrive. rin is impossible to miss â sharp movements, intense focus, jaw clenched like heâs at war with the ground beneath his feet. the moment his eyes flick up and land on you, something soft flashes across his face.Â
then he sees sae.Â
and whatever warmth there was vanishes.Â
he stalks over during a break, irritation written into every line of his body. âwhat are you doing here? again?âÂ
âwatching,â sae replies easily. âlast day.âÂ
rinâs eyes snap to you. âwhy are you of all people with him?âÂ
you blink, taken aback by the edge in his voice.Â
âwe ran into each other,â you say evenly. âi didnât know i needed permission.âÂ
sae snorts. ârelax. iâm not stealing her.âÂ
rin bristles. âthatâs notââÂ
âyou like him?âÂ
sae asks it so casually that it almost doesnât register at first.Â
you choke a little. âexcuse me?âÂ
sae doesnât look at rin. his eyes stay on you. calm. observant. âyou like my brother?âÂ
rinâs glare could cut glass. âsae.âÂ
you donât answer right away. then softly, honestly, âi care about him.âÂ
sae hums. âthatâll do.âÂ
rin looks like he wants the earth to open and swallow him whole.Â
but surprisingly, he chooses the mature route and turns around, already going back to his teammates, ball back under his cleats and focus locked in once again.Â
practice resumes. you sit on the bleachers while sae leans against the fence beside you, watching with a critical eye. rin plays hard. too hard. aggressive. reckless. like heâs trying to prove something to the air itself.Â
your phone buzzes. itâs a notification from your calendar app, reminding you about your study block thatâs supposed to begin in 10 minutes. you stand, slinging your bag over your shoulder.Â
âi should go,â you murmur.Â
sae nods. âyeah.âÂ
you take a step away âÂ
and then it happens.Â
a sharp collision. a shout. rin goes down hard, hitting the turf with a sickening thud.Â
your heart lurches violently into your throat.Â
ârinâ!âÂ
you donât even realize youâre moving until youâre halfway down the steps, breath shallow, eyes locked on him as he stays down a second too long.Â
saeâs posture changes instantly. the humor drains from his expression.Â
on the field, teammates crowd around rin as he finally shifts, pushing himself up with visible strain.Â
your chest feels tight. wrong.Â
something about the way he moves â too stiff, too forced â sends a chill straight through you.Â
you stop short, fingers curling into your bag strap.Â
this wasnât supposed to happen.Â
and as rin lifts his head, eyes searching the stands again, finding you, you realize youâre not leaving.Â
bachira is at rinâs side before anyone even whistles the play dead.Â
ârin, hey, hey, you good?â bachira drops into a crouch, hands hovering like he doesnât know where to touch without making it worse. his smile is there, but itâs strained now, eyes flicking over rinâs posture, the way he favors one side without realizing it.Â
rin sucks in a sharp breath through his teeth, then pushes himself upright like itâs nothing. âiâm fine.âÂ
youâre already there, too â didnât remember moving, just that the distance between you and the field vanished in seconds. sae appears at your side a heartbeat later, expression unreadable, but eyes sharp, scanning rin from head to toe.Â
âyou went down hard,â sae says. not accusatory. just factual.Â
rin shrugs one shoulder. itâs stiff. barely noticeable unless youâre looking for it. âbad landing.âÂ
âyou stayed down,â bachira presses, quieter now.Â
rin finally looks at you.Â
and thatâs what does it.Â
your guard slips the moment your eyes meet his and he gives you that look â that calm, steady, iâm okay, donât worry look that feels so practiced it should scare you.Â
âsee?â he says, softer. âiâm fine.âÂ
you exhale, tension easing from your shoulders despite the knot still lodged in your chest. maybe this is it. maybe this explains everything â the distance, the exhaustion, the way heâs always running himself into the ground.Â
heâs just⊠like this.Â
âstill,â you say, trying to sound reasonable instead of panicked, âletâs at least go to the health room.âÂ
rin opens his mouth to protest.Â
sae cuts in immediately. âyouâre going.âÂ
rin shoots him a glare. âi saidââÂ
âyou went down in front of everyone,â sae replies coolly. âhumor us.âÂ
bachira grins, clapping rin on the back a little too cheerfully. âyeah, man. come on. you wonât be a good example for the first years.âÂ
rin clicks his tongue, annoyed, but he relents.Â
the walk to the health room is quiet in that awkward, too-aware way. rin walks ahead of you, posture rigid, hands shoved into his pockets like heâs daring his body to betray him again. bachira walks beside you, glancing between you and rin with a look thatâs half-curious, half-knowing. sae trails behind, silent. watching everything.Â
inside, the nurse fusses immediately, motioning rin onto the bed and peeling back his soccer jacket with practiced efficiency. thereâs a bruise already blooming along his side, dark and angry.Â
you wince before you can stop yourself. rin notices.Â
âitâs nothing,â he says quickly.Â
the nurse shoots him a look. âyou athletes are all the same.âÂ
she presses gently at his side. rin doesnât flinch. not visibly. but his jaw tightens, just a fraction.Â
âyou need rest,â she continues. âand you need to stop pushing yourself like your bodyâs expendable.âÂ
rin stares at the wall.Â
âdo you hear me?â she asks.Â
âyeah,â he says.Â
âiâm serious,â she insists. âyou keep this up, youâll end up with injuries that donât heal cleanly.âÂ
bachira shifts his weight, smile gone now. sae folds his arms.Â
you watch rin closely, waiting for him to say something. anything.Â
he doesnât.Â
the nurse sighs. âi want you taking it easy for the next few days.âÂ
rin nods.Â
you almost believe him. almost.Â
because the second she turns away, the look on his face hardens â not defiant, not angry. just⊠resolved. like someone whoâs already decided this conversation doesnât apply to him. like pain is just another thing to work through.Â
and you, standing there beside him, let yourself think you finally understand.Â
you donât. not even close.Â
the city never really sleeps. it just holds its breath between sirens.Â
rin moves through the skyline like muscle memory, rain-slick buildings blurring past as his web catches, releases, catches again. his shoulder still aches from earlier, a dull reminder heâs learned to ignore. tonight feels calm, too calm. petty theft stopped before it starts, a drunk argument broken up with nothing more than a warning and a look. just routine.Â
then his spider sense spikes.Â
sharp. violent. wrong.Â
rin pivots mid-swing, landing hard on the edge of a warehouse rooftop just as shouting erupts below. not a mugging. not a simple hit-and-run. thereâs smoke, thick and chemical, pouring out of a loading bay door torn halfway off its hinges.Â
armed robbery. organized. sloppy.Â
he drops in fast.Â
three men. masks. automatic weapons. one of them already firing wildly into the air to keep civilians back. another dragging a duffel thatâs definitely too heavy to just be cash.Â
rin doesnât announce himself. he never does.Â
webs snap out, pinning one man to a stack of crates with a startled shout. another swings around, firing on instinct. rin barely twists out of the way, bullets sparking against concrete where his head had been a second earlier.Â
âshit!â one of them yells. âitâs him!!âÂ
the fight turns ugly fast.Â
rin moves on reflex â strike, web, disarm â but theyâre more coordinated than he expected. one of them charges instead of retreating, blade flashing in his hand, serrated and brutal.Â
rin ducks the first slash.Â
but doesnât dodge the second.Â
pain explodes white-hot across his lower abdomen.Â
he gasps despite himself, stumbling back as blood immediately soaks into the dark fabric of his suit. the man doesnât hesitate, shoving him hard, trying to follow through.Â
rin grits his teeth and retaliates on pure instinct â knee to the ribs, elbow to the throat, web straight to the face. the man goes down choking, clawing uselessly at the sticky strands.Â
sirens wail in the distance now. too close.Â
rin finishes it quickly after that â webbing the remaining men, disabling the weapons, sealing the scene like itâs all under control even though his vision is starting to blur at the edges.Â
he backs away as police flood the street.Â
someone shouts his name. âspider man! youâre hurt!!!âÂ
he doesnât wait.Â
he fires a web, launches himself upward, and disappears into the rain before anyone can stop him.Â
before anyone can see how bad it is.Â
by the time the news breaks, the city is already buzzing.Â
grainy footage. shaky phone videos. headlines scrolling too fast.Â
SPIDER MAN INJURED DURING NIGHTLY PATROLÂ
STATUS UNKNOWN â HERO DISAPPEARS BEFORE MEDICS ARRIVEÂ
youâre wiping down the last table when the alert cuts through the cafeâs low music.Â
âbreaking newsââÂ
you freeze.Â
the mop bucket sloshes slightly as the TV above the counter switches feeds. rain-soaked footage fills the screen, spider man mid-motion, blood dark against his suit in a way that makes your stomach drop.Â
you stare. too still.Â
ââsources say he sustained a serious abdominal injuryââÂ
your chest tightens.Â
you donât know why your mind goes there.Â
donât know why the image of rin earlier â brushing off pain, saying he was fine â slides so easily into place.Â
ââmedical personnel were unable to locate himââÂ
your hands shake.Â
rin.Â
you swallow hard, trying to be logical. stupid. irrational. heâs a soccer player. this is ridiculous. coincidences happen all the time.Â
but the thought wonât let go.Â
your phone buzzes in your pocket. you donât check it.Â
you just stand there, staring at the screen as the reporter keeps talking and something cold settles deep in your gut. because for the first time âÂ
youâre not just worried about spider man.Â
youâre scared for rin.Â
the hallway outside rinâs apartment smells like rain and concrete and someone elseâs late-night dinner.Â
you stand there with your phone pressed to your ear, heart beating so loud you swear it echoes. your other hand is curled into the strap of your bag, knuckles pale. you shouldnât be here. you know that. this is impulsive, invasive, crossing lines you normally wouldnât even look at.Â
but the image of blood on a screen wonât leave your head.Â
the call connects.Â
â⊠hello?â rinâs voice comes through, low, breathless in a way that makes your stomach twist. a sliding window door closes in the background.Â
you donât ease into it. you donât soften it.Â
âiâm outside your door,â you say. âplease let me in.âÂ
silence.Â
not the kind where the call drops. not the kind where he didnât hear you.Â
the kind where you can almost hear him thinking.Â
on the other side of the door, rinâs apartment is a mess of half-light and panic. rainwater drips from his suit onto the floor in dark, spreading stains. his discarded mask lies near the couch, his chest rising too fast as he presses a hand to his lower abdomen.Â
itâs still bleeding. not fast, but steady. persistent. unforgiving.Â
outside his door. you.Â
rin closes his eyes.Â
shit.Â
â⊠nowâs not a good time,â he says finally, voice too controlled, too careful. âiâm not feeling great. i think you should go home.âÂ
âno.âÂ
one word. flat. final.Â
he exhales sharply. âyou came all this way. itâs late. iâll text you tomorrowââÂ
ârin,â you interrupt, and now your voice shakes despite your effort not to let it. âi saw the news.âÂ
his grip tightens against the wound.Â
â⊠what does that have to do with anything.âÂ
âdonât,â you say. âdonât do that. not right now.âÂ
he swallows. âyouâre tired. youâre scared because of some headline, and youâre projectingââÂ
âopen the door.âÂ
another pause. longer this time.Â
you step closer, forehead nearly touching the metal. âplease. if youâre fine, iâll leave. i swear. i just need to see you.âÂ
rin laughs under his breath, sharp and humorless.Â
âyouâre being stubborn.âÂ
you huff out a shaky breath. âlearned it from you.âÂ
inside, something in him gives.Â
maybe itâs the blood loss. maybe itâs exhaustion. maybe itâs the way you said please like it wasnât a demand, just a need.Â
he moves slowly, every step pulling at the injury, leaving another dark drop behind him. his hand hesitates on the lock.Â
click.Â
the door opens.Â
you barely have time to register the dim light, the unfamiliar space âÂ
before your eyes drop.Â
to the suit. black and teal, darkened with rain and blood.Â
to the deep gash across his lower abdomen, angry and real and still bleeding.Â
to rin.Â
standing there in spider manâs suit. mask off.Â
same face. same eyes.Â
your breath leaves you in one broken sound.Â
â⊠rin?âÂ
he doesnât answer.Â
he just stands there, shoulders tense, jaw tight, exposed in a way heâs never been before â as a hero, as a boy, as himself.Â
and suddenly, everything makes sense.Â
