May I please request a prompt where Masaomi is a witch and Shiori or Youji is his familiar? Super love all your writing, it has honestly brought me so much joy and every time the pandemic gets to me, reading it makes me feel so much better :)
Masaomi runs deeper into the forest, and he knows there's a very good chance he's going to die.
This is new and he hates it. There's not a lot that can kill a witch, and particularly not a witch as powerful as he is. There's never been anything that posed the slightest threat to him before.
Now, his entire clan has betrayed him, temporarily stripped him of his power, and sent hellbeasts to kill him. The hellbeasts will certainly kill him, if they catch him, and he can hear them howling, getting closer by the second.
So he runs into the forest, because he only has one chance to get out of this alive.
Months ago, Shiori asked him, "Would you ever take a familiar?"
And he'd snorted, saying, "No, of course not. Familiars are only for people who need to boost their power using outside means. That's a strategy for the weak, Shiori."
"Is it? I have always liked the idea," Shiori said, smiling.
"It's not worth it," Masaomi told her, because he knew what she was thinking and he didn't want her to take the risk. "You bond with the first creature that answers your call. You could end up with something sickly or weak, and then you would be vulnerable."
"I do not believe there are many sickly or weak stars," Shiori replied.
"I've seen it happen," Masaomi told her. Bonding a familiar wasn't easy like the stories made it sound, where any witch could pick up any stray cat and claim it as their own. You beseeched the stars with blood and prayer, and sometimes a star would come down and make a contract with you, and you were a stronger witch for it. But there were weak stars, and they made weak familiars, and Masaomi would never, ever trust his fate to someone else.
He'd rather depend on his own strength.
That changes, of course, when his strength fails him. When all the magic he has is temporarily absent, and he's running for his life.
So he runs into the forest, and he cuts his hand as he does so, and he says the words that offer his soul to the stars.
He feels the moment the contract takes place. It hits like a heart attack, and he's completely consumed by the blaze. When he returns to his senses the bodies of hellbeasts are strewn at his feet, and there's a naked man in front of him.
"That was efficient," Masaomi says, impressed by the slaughter. At least he wasn't partnered with a weak familiar.
"Thanks," the man says. The man pinches his own skin and says, "huh. So this is what flesh is like. Neat."
This isn't how the sacred familiar-bonding ceremony usually goes, but Masaomi approves. "What's your name?"
The man thinks and then says, "Youji," like he's deciding something.
"Youji, would you like to form a contract with me?"
"Sure," Youji says. "What do you want?"
"Protection," Masaomi says instantly. "And vengeance."
Youji grins. "Sounds like fun."
A/N: Thanks, anon-friend! I’m so glad you enjoy my writing and that it’s helped through the pandemic =) Sorry this took so long. I loved the idea but kept forgetting about it. I came up with something that's a little bit Shine the Brightest, and a little bit Howl's Moving Castle. Thanks again!!
