-A hooded figure stooped over a bundle of fabric, its contents asleep within its confines. A hand reached out to tuck the infant securely as a lone tear dropped on its cheek. It rustled a little, its face scrunched up as it began to cry-
Hush Ryuko... don't cry...
-The soft voice carries throughout the empty hallway, as the hooded figure picks up the baby and held it tight. It rocked the bundle back and forth, the humming of a tuneless song soothing the infant until it fell back asleep. Careful footsteps pattered along until they stopped in front of a room. Hesitation was imminent as the hooded figure held the baby close, their arms trembling...-
I love you Ryuko... grow up to be a strong woman, okay...? Mama will miss you... Mama will miss you very much...
-The hooded figure took in a breath and slid the door open, enough to slip into the room unnoticed. They walked slowly, carefully, towards the man that lay asleep in the middle. His hair askew, it was clear that he was in deep sleep, his features peaceful and undisturbed. The hooded figure set the infant down beside him, careful not to move suddenly lest he woke up.
...A few silent moments pass before the hooded figure removed its hood, revealing a petite young woman who looked at the two with sad eyes. Her hair showed signs of being recently cut, albeit rather clumsily, almost hurriedly. She took in a deep breath and reached out, her hand hovering over the man's cheek. She shifted his hair away from his face, revealing an eyepatch over the man's eye. She traced the pattern with gentle fingers, her eyes pricking with tears.
She tried to speak, opening and closing her mouth several times, but no sound came. She swallowed, tried again, and found herself wiping silent tears from her face-
...I'm sorry... I never... I never should have... and now I'm... I don't know what to say... only that... I wish you could forgive me for what I'm about to do...
-Her voice trembled as she withdrew her hand, gazing upon the one eyed man's face with a wistful look-
...I guess... it wasn't meant to be. For a moment there... I thought I could be happy... and for a while... I was... you showed me that I could love and be loved... but...
...I really... I really have no excuse.
...Take care of Ryuko, okay?
-She bent down, mindful of the infant between them both, and planted a gentle kiss on his lips. She stayed there for a few moments...
...Lips hovering a mere few inches from each other...-

"I'll make ya a deal. When I screw up and my final moments are here, I'll let you deal the finishing blow. Sound good?"
"Fine."
Word Count: Roughly 1200.
Characters: Date Masamune (Sengoku Basara) Magoichi Saika (Sengoku Musou)
Character Death Inside! You have been warned!
I wrote this drabble based on a conversation I had with askdate/masamun the other night. I dunno how this long thing came out of a few things we said, but here's the result. I think it went pretty alright, but I think Masamune was a bit OOC. ...Probably because this is my first time EVER portraying him. Ah well, I tried.
Here's to you derps (you know who you are).
It sucked. Being a stoneās throw away from home and inevitably never greeting your father a last time? Even an emotionless shell of a dying man felt a shred of sadness. He suffered from a gunshot wound piercing a spot on his heart, blood leaking through the hole where the bullet swept clean through. This man rivaled his own talents; the mystery shooter shot a moving target with perfect accuracy, and heād walk away hands clean. Lady Luck mustāve chosen a new favorite.
With his heart losing its beat rapidly, he was reduced to scaling the various trees outside the Saika Village, arms extended to percept gaps between barks. Bloodshot eyes were just about useless in the aspect of their normal function, thus sound and touch were the last tools at his disposal. However, as time went on, just the thought of taking a step became painful, and the actual motion increased the pain tenfold. A sad way to die indeed.
But the saddest thing of all? Heād die alone.
He was born alone.
The majority of his life was spent alone.
And to top it off, this journey would end just as it began: alone.
There werenāt any objects concerning the trivial matter. Renegades chose the path of loneliness to keep food on the table, and possibly meet a few others like them on the road. And by meeting these people, the world wouldnāt be as unaccepting as the start of the path. Heād know that first-hand. Assisting the āunpopularā lords created bonds with those you might see once or twice in your lifetime, but even spotting a breathing human meant a lot.
Ā Speaking of breathing, he wasnāt having the best time completing the most essential and easiest task in life. The extra blood his heart leaked both inside and outside his body was clotting in random areas and blocking arteries as a result. To think, a single shot completely destroyed his entire existenceā¦and this would all happen without a single person knowing. Heād leave this world breaking a promise, a morbid one, but a promise no less. Considering what little words he could speak, what could he change?
Collapsing onto the soft, recently red-tinted grass, the sounds of anotherās footsteps met his ears. Sounds of an armored boot rang through the silence, stopping as it approached him. Their master stood there frozen; was it someone who knew him? Everything looked a shade of red and blurry; he couldnāt make out his own hands in front of his face.
Ā āHey thereā¦howāre ya?ā He greeted, doing his best to smile.
Whoever hovered over him grunted, clicking his tongue in distaste. They stepped closer, kneeling down to meet him at an eye level. Right away he noticed the eye patch covering his right eye, driving his muddled thoughts to speculate who this person might be. The two people he knew who wore an eye patch were his lord, Masamune, and his much taller counterpart who hated his very fiber, Date. This man (ladies werenāt so tall, so it had to be a man observing him) matched his height, soā¦
āDaā¦te?ā
Ā āYeah.ā Date replied, gaze narrowing, āI found these thugs talking their prey of the day and I followed your trail here.ā He then stifled a laugh, almost seeming amused instead of worried, āYou sure know how to up and disappear, Mago. I probably wouldnāt be here if Keiji wasnāt hounding me ābout how you suddenly went missing.ā
ā¦Keiji was worried? Hmm. He misjudged the actions he took preceding the events that led up to him taking a bullet. Though considering the time they spent together and the sights they shared, any sort of prolonged absence left seeds of doubt in their wake. Doubts aside, why was Date the one to come searching for him? Ā If Keiji got himself wondering where he left, why didnāt he investigate himself? ā¦Magoichiās mind couldnāt organize his thoughts anymore. All of his thoughts together were like a puzzle missing hundreds of pieces.
āHaā¦figures. Heās suchā¦ā The word he wanted to say refused to come out; he let that sentence hang, āWellā¦at leastā¦I keptā¦our promiseā¦right?ā
Date scowled, his hand instinctively grabbing the hilt of his top left āclaw.ā Oshuās Hittou wished the bloody promise he made with Magoichi wouldnāt need to be fulfilled too soon, but he was powerless. No amount of medical attention had a chance of saving Mago after losing vast amounts of blood and the remaining drops clotting to worsen his condition. The crowās salvation rested on a swift and painless end; a thing their promise ensured.
āBefore I hold up my end, somethingās bugging me. Whyād you ask me to kill you?ā Date asked, hardly understanding Magoichiās logic, āIf you wanted one of your enemies to kill you, why not pick one closer and save me the trouble?ā
Ā Magoichi burst out laughing before his laugh turned into a blood-filled coughing spree; Date stood rooted on the spot. He recovered his breathing after a few more coughs, clearing throat to speak, āāCause I wanted two things. First, I wanted to die with at least someone I know who doesnāt completely despise me around. At the same time, I wanted this person to hate me enough so he couldnāt care if they killed me. Sounds like you, right?ā
Ā Talking so fluently tore at his lungs, depleting the limited amount of air left inside. Breathing heavily barely gathered the oxygen required to take another breath, and the frequent coughs interrupted the breaths he prepared. If Magoichi wasnāt lying before a āfriend,ā heād be crying or screaming out of fear of dying a second time. He once cheated death by enlisting the aid of the Goddess Kaguya, but she left years ago. This time, death meant a permanent end.
ā¦And he couldnāt be any gladder. Ā
āDateā¦ā Magoichi lifted his head, meeting Dateās lone blue eye, āIāve gotā¦one last favor.ā
āSpit it out.ā
āPleaseā¦apologizeā¦to Masamuneā¦and Keijiā¦for me.ā A hand shielded his face for a pretty obvious reason, āTheyāll beā¦so pissedā¦if I donātā¦yāknow?ā
āHah!ā Date smirked, drawing a single blade as Magoichi, without plainly saying, requested, āYouāre really somethinā, you know that? Alright, if it makes you happy turning me into your slave in the afterlife, Iāll humor ya one last time. If I meet you in hell a day later, youāll be greeted by more than one of the Dragonās Claws next time.ā
Date raised his drawn sword, creating a clear path from above his own head to Magoās neck. Magoichi stood as still as he could, occasionally jerking forward as he coughed his lungs out. His hand shook when he thought whatād be the result of his next move, yet thereās no backing down. Letting a comrade die slowly and painfully wasnāt what leaders did, even if they werenāt men from their clan.Ā
Ā āSee you in hell, Magoichi.ā
Snrk!
~~~~
Riding through the snowy weather of Oshu, Date found it difficult to stop scowling. He ālostā his claw during the trip back home, and turning around and heading back to Sakai was a foolās action. In the place of an old promise, Date acquired a new one, and from the same idiot who entered his life as fast as he left.
āYou better be laughing it up down in hell or Iāll go down there and kill ya myself.ā Date said to no one in particular, āIām ruler of Oshu, not your promise runner.ā
