Fez-Marrakech Train
We had an early morning start yesterday for out (minimum) 8 hour train ride between Fez and Marrakech over the High Atlas Mountains. This is after quite a late night at La Palais Faraj for dinner. A stunning modern hotel/riad with French and Moroccan food. The bathroom was floor to ceiling mirrors, I felt like I was in a 1980′s drug lord’s house.
We were in first class, which means little compartments for 6 people and air conditioning. This old Moroccan man was insisting Roger was in his seat, until I noticed his ticket was to Rabat - which I didn’t know how to tell him. This of course led to me panicking that we were on the train to Rabat instead of Marrakech but on further investigation we were all set. Some Germans also tried to snag our seats but they were on the wrong car. I think they need to rethink their ticketing system...
We had a young guy in our car for a while who kept getting phone calls and kept his ringtone super loud. Then he left and we had two women and all of their friends who sat on the floor outside the car. It was super confusing and loud - but really we had most of the ride to ourselves and it wasn’t terrifying like the train to Sapa in Vietnam so I was fine.
About 3/4 of the way through though the air conditioning became spotty and it was a sweaty ride from there. Everyone was feeling fussy and lethargic until we got to Marrakech and our riad where we all got upgraded. Kris and my room is actually two bedrooms on two separate levels with a bathroom down below. It’s stunning - Miatta is in our guest room so really she and Roger each have their own room.
Off to our city tour, more to follow!
