I did my undergraduate dissertation on piracy in west Africa and even though I didn’t do as well as I thought I would, I’m trying not to let it put me off exploring an area that I’m really interested in.

Formation steaming….

                                (....towards a naval encounter?)

CARIBBEAN SEA (May 11, 2020) -- United States Navy littoral combat ship USS Detroit (LCS 7) leads a formation of warships....including guided-missile destroyers USS Lassen (DDG 82), USS Preble (DDG 88) and USS Farragut (DDG 99)....with a P-8A Poseidon multi-mission aircraft and two ship-based SH-60 Seahawk helicopters overhead....as the group conducts routine maritime security operations.

These ships and aircraft will do everything from drug and human-trafficking interdiction, search and rescue, assisting vessels in distress, live-fire training events, diplomatic calls, and any other tasking that may evolve while they’re on station.

There’s roughly 1,000 American Sailors and Airmen manning the four ships and three aircraft in the photo above.

And, speaking of evolving tasking....(as of May 22, 2020)....

An interesting scenario....and possible naval encounter....is about to unfold....

There is every indication that this maritime patrol group is also monitoring the approach of four Iranian supertankers filled with oil....apparently, suspiciously, payed for in pure gold....and bound for Venezuela -- in direct violation of multiple United States sanctions, for independent reasons, against both the Iranian and Venezuelan despotic regimes.

This is a “shot across the bow” by both antagonists, testing United States resolve....and in the middle of the Great Coronavirus Pandemic!

The first of the four tankers should arrive in the Caribbean the first week in June 2020.

Will the U.S. intercept that tanker with these warships?

A very real, very interesting possibility!

What happens to the other three tankers enroute?
