"Beyoncé became “The Visitor,” wearing a sparkling, skeletal gown and headpiece that took direct inspiration from a lithograph by Caroline Durieux, a Creole painter, printmaker, and satirist. A New Orleans native, Durieux (1896–1989) was a central figure in the French Quarter’s vibrant 1920s–40s arts community and was featured in the famous 1926 book “Sherwood Anderson and Other Famous Creoles,” an illustrated who’s-who of the local bohemian scene with a foreword by William Faulkner. In 1976, Durieux became the first living artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Historic New Orleans Collection. ... She led the only FAP division in the country that did not actively discriminate against Black artists. “I had a feeling that an artist is an artist and it doesn't make any difference what color he or she is,” Durieux said."
