Google Doodle celebrates Marcel Marceau's 100th birthday, on 22nd March 2023. Marcel Marceau, a famous French mime artist, was born in Strasbourg, France in 1923 and passed away on 22nd September 2007. The Doodle features a cartoon version of Marceau in his iconic costume performing his mime act. Marcel Marceau's life story is as intriguing as his performances. During the German occupation of France, he changed his surname to Marceau from Mangel to escape being identified as Jewish. As a child, he was captivated by movies and dreamed of being in silent films. He used his mime skills to help smuggle Jewish children out of Nazi-occupied France during the war. His pantomimes kept the children calm during the dangerous journey to the Switzerland border, and he managed to save at least 70 children. After the war, Marceau studied dramatic acting and mime at the School of Dramatic Art of the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre in Paris. He became famous for his character Bip the Clown, a tragicomic figure with a striped shirt, white face paint, and a battered beflowered hat. Bip expressed a range of human emotions without words, and Marceau founded the Compagnie de Mime Marcel Marceau soon after. E Waits: “È strano, due facciate di 20 minuti l’una, 19 di silenzio e uno di applausi”. Io risi, pensando fosse una battuta, invece era vero. Waits voleva dirmi che la bellezza va stanata e cercata dove si nasconde. Marcel Marceau era la bellezza. Non solo per la sua arte, non solo perché inventò il #moonwalk che poi avrebbe ispirato #michaeljackson. Marcel Marceau era un eroe.
