Wintergatan, aka Martin Molin released the first official video of the marble machine in 2016 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvUU8joBb1Q), the first iteration was made mainly out of wood and was successful in producing the music intended, but still had many flaws in the design due to its “DIY” nature as the multiple moving parts would drop marbles frequently. The second design (image 2 + 3) was much more engineered and accurate and achieved the functionality very well while being aesthetically pleasing, displaying the moving parts in a artistic way. Martin came to realise that these two aspects were clashing with one another and decided to start the 3rd iteration recently, which aims to focus more on the engineering, keeping things simple and sticking to a preliminary digital CAD design rather than designing and manufacturing parts as time went by and as new things were required, as the problem of never finishing is much more likely in a situation where you don’t have a clear outcome to use as reference.
Following Martin through his creative journey has been immensely awakening, as he has come to where he is now since the beginning his experimentation and dedication to the project has taught multiple lessons in how to become a better engineer and decision maker through in person making.
