Pomare IV ʻAimata Pōmare IV Vahine-o-Punuateraʻitua was the queen of Tahiti from 1827 to 1877. She arrived at the throne at age 14, after the death of her brother Pomare III. When in 1843, France declared Tahiti a French protectorate, she fought against their establishment and tried rallying the british to her cause, in vain. Ensued a bloody 5 years conflict, from 1843 to 1847, between the French and all the Society Islands’ kingdoms. The tahitian lost, but the French couldn’t annex the island due to pressure from British. A settlment was made with Pomare IV, ensuring independance of Huahine, Raiatea and Bora Bora.
