Trailers From Hell: JD Lifshitz on MANIAC COP
First there was Robocop, then there was Maniac Cop, director Bill Lustig and producer Larry Cohen’s low-rent gorefest about a cop returned from a near-death experience and out for revenge. The potential for politically charged satire ala the Verhoeven classic goes out the window as the bodies pile up—even star Bruce Campbell thought it was “not a good movie.” Nevertheless, it hit a nerve or two and sequels were dutifully churned out along with entrails, brains, and broken bones.
