I think about little sparks of happenstance quite a bit. This photo, for example, wasn't meant to be. I was commissioned by a client to shoot something else entirely earlier in the night. The shoot had run longer than it should have which resulted in the client arranging for me to have a room in a hotel that night. Despite living just a bit further downtown at the time, it made sense to not have to rush back downtown during a snowy rush hour subway commute with all of my gear.  . . . I finished shooting the assignment (hotel interiors and food), made my way to the room, and sat down on the bed gazing out of the window as the first periwinkle hues of dawn brushed across a sky full of clouds.  . . . And then the flakes started to fall. They fell gradually at first in that sort of haphazard way that snow falls when it first starts, clumsily floating in the air like tired dancers sleepily dancing. In a matter of minutes the city was coated in snow, skyscrapers glazed in icing sugar as dawn tried its hardest to assert itself onto the day.  . . . I remember taking my camera out of its bag and thinking to myself that it was the first time I had ever taken a photo of the NYC skyline at sunrise. What were the odds of getting a room with such a view merely as a place to rest my weary head for the morning? . . . I will never forget how magical that moment felt as I watched winter embrace the city. Moments like those are sometimes hard to come by but worth looking out for and embracing. . . .
