In New Mexico, the United States Army conducts the first detonation of a nuclear weapon as part of the Manhattan Project.
The Szilárd petition, drafted and circulated in July 1945 by scientist Leo Szilard was signed by 70 scientists working on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge Tennessee qnd the MET lab in Chicago. It never made it to President Truman and was not declassified until 1961.

The Manhattan Project is on the list of historical things that I should learn more about (a list which is unreasonably long tbh), but I get a ton of random disconnected bits of information about it from my brother lol there's always a relevant story, because literally everything happened in the Manhattan Project somehow?!?!?? 😭
I think my favorite one I've heard so far is that time Feynman(? I think.) had a lockpicking phase and was just. Going around. Picking locks. For fun. In the areas where they were investing the first nuclear bomb. Because he could. Eventually someone had to tell him to Stop Doing That Please.
A few weeks ago we watched the movie Oppenheimer. It was good, a nicely done biography of him. But after it was over I found myself wishing someone could do a film on the creation of the bomb. An ensemble piece that did not focus on any one person, but told the dozens of stories, the tragic accidents, the funny slip ups, the characters that took part. Yes it is easier to write a story focussing on one person. It is also easier for audiences to understand. But the Manhattan project was bigger than that and the story has never been told.
