Katyyy I’m in agony 🥲 have you seen what’s happened with Mangadex? Do you believe that it’ll be fine or will the site truly be gone for good? This is genuinely so devastating
It really is fucking devastating. I've been upset about this all day :(((
That being said, I'm old enough to remember when Batoto was the main scanlation hub and got nuked; it was devastating, but from its ashes Mangadex rose. And it was even better than its predecessor. This thread goes into the whole cycle of manga piracy and it's encouraging. Even if Mangadex doesn't survive, something WILL take its place.
Also, as someone who's been into piracy for longer than some newer anime/manga fans have been alive, I do just want to reiterate that piracy is a hydra. Cut off a head and at least 3 more take its place. Studies have consistently shown that the only thing that actually curbs piracy is making things more accessible for a reasonable price. Media conglomerates are just providing worse service for a higher cost than piracy, so they're doomed to fail no matter how many attacks they launch.
Also, reminder that the international anime/manga scene was literally built on piracy. Scanlations, fandubs, fansubs, etc were all that was available until relatively recently. Crunchyroll actually started off as a piracy site hosting fansubs until they went all corporate. Because of this history, weeb subculture is better at piracy than anyone else. I'm not worried about Mangadex or a potential successor bouncing back, it's just a matter of time.
