Mamata Banerjee Takes to Kolkata Streets, Leads Surprise 1.2-km Protest March Over Hawkers Eviction Drive
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unexpectedly hit the streets of Kolkata on Wednesday, leading a 1.2-kilometre protest march against the ongoing hawkers removal campaign.
Starting from Esplanade and ending at Subodh Mallick Square, the march saw participation from senior TMC leaders, local hawkers and supporters. Banerjee opposed the eviction drive, calling action without proper rehabilitation unjust and harmful to the livelihoods of thousands of street vendors.
The surprise protest reportedly caught the administration off guard and has sparked fresh political debate in West Bengal. The development also comes amid discussions over internal political tensions within the Trinamool Congress.
