I am going to say the obvious but the biggest tragedy (one of many) of Ikoku Nikki is how much Makio and Minori needed each other.
But because of how much they’ve been hurt by one another, and probably because of pride, they never got to help one another.
They are the representations of each other’s insecurities. The holes in their heart are shaped like one another. They hate themselves the way they taught each other how to.
And they will never get to understand that about one another.
Makio will never know how much Minori learned the errors of her ways, and how much she was a victim of them herself. She will never know Minori talked of her lovingly, and admiringly.
Minori will never get to apologize- something that, probably due to her pride and hurt , she put off.
How could she? Due to how harsh she was to Makio, Makio was equally harsh to her. She must be aware that their relationship has been strained endlessly; how can she expect Makio to have good will against her suffering- when she herself cannot acknowledge her pain as anything other than her utter failure?
They make me so sad and kinda remind me of how my relationship with my sisters used to be before theraphy.
