My Corner of the Universe
I’m someone who has spent a lot of my life feeling like an observer.
I’m deaf and I wear cochlear implants. I’ve learned to experience the world differently. I’ve learned to watch faces, read expressions, and pay attention to the little details because sometimes words don’t always make it to me.
People sometimes notice my cochlear implants before they notice me.
They might notice the way I speak, the way I listen, or the fact that I need things a little differently.
And sometimes I wonder what they think.
Do they think I’m awkward?
Do they think communicating with me is too much work?
Do they see what I can’t hear before they see who I am?
For a long time, I thought those things were what defined me.
I’m also someone who is almost always listening to music.
Music has been one of my escapes for as long as I can remember. Sometimes I put my bluetooth on not just because I want to hear a song, but because it helps me block out the overwhelming noise of everything around me.
It gives my brain a place to rest.
It’s funny because music is something that brings me comfort, but it’s also something that reminds me of the struggles I deal with.
Because sometimes when I’m lost in a song, there’s a little thought in the back of my mind:
“What if someone is trying to get my attention?”
“What if someone is talking to me and I don’t know?”
“What if I miss something important?”
It’s a strange feeling loving something that can also remind you of what you might miss.
But I still choose music.
Because even if I don’t experience the world exactly like everyone else, I still want to experience it.
I’m someone who gets excited about space, horror, strange stories, knitting, and a little bit of everything that make me wonder about what’s out there.
I’m someone who can be quiet at first, but once I’m comfortable, the weird jokes come out. I can go from talking about life’s biggest questions to laughing at something completely stupid.
I overthink. I care a lot. I notice small things. I remember moments that other people might forget.
I’ve spent a lot of time feeling like I was watching life happen from the outside.
But I’m starting to realize that being different doesn’t mean I don’t belong.
I’m still learning who I am.
I’m still finding my people.
I’m still writing my story.
And for someone who spent so long feeling invisible…
I think that’s a pretty good place to start.
Goodnight from the guy who listens to music, looks at the stars, laughs at dumb things, and is finally learning that he deserves a place in this world. 🖤
