the Makah tribe has requested a permit to hunt gray whales - a right already conferred to them through treaties - but the decision on whether or not to issue the permit is open for public comment before a decision is made. please support Indigenous self determination and the culturally significant, environmentally conscious practices of the Makah people by writing in support, as there are already comments opposed. it breaks my heart to think that we are still refusing to allow generations of Indigenous people to partake in their own cultural and forcing assimilation via bans on traditional practices.

salmonberries grow along the north american coast, from california to alaska, and have been consumed by indigenous peoples since time immemorial. traditionally the young shoots as well as the later berries were eaten raw. they have always been an incredibly important food. in qʷi·qʷi·diččaqʔiq, the berries are called 'qakweyu/cha’alowa'. for the makah, the berries are so important that two of their lunar months are named for the fruit, Oqoska’d1LpEL, when the bushes sprout, & KakEcpEL, when salmonberries ripen. the bark was used to treat toothaches & reduce wound pain.
