In mainstream Islamic belief, the Mahdi is a righteous leader — the "Guided One" — who appears in end times to fight evil, establish justice, and ally with Jesus (Isa). Together, they defeat the Antichrist figure, called the **Dajjal**, the deceptive false messiah who claims to be God and spreads tyranny.
The theory that the Mahdi *is* the Antichrist comes mostly from some evangelical Christian writers, like Joel Richardson. They point out surface similarities — both are powerful end-times leaders, conquer territory, make treaties, operate from Jerusalem — and argue Islamic prophecy is basically a mirror image of the Bible's, with the roles of good and evil flipped. In this view, the Mahdi would be the biblical beast, and Islamic Jesus would be the false prophet.
Most Muslims and many Christian scholars reject that idea. The Mahdi is explicitly on the side of truth and monotheism in Islamic sources, while the Dajjal is the direct counterpart to the Antichrist — a deceiver who performs fake miracles. The parallels are interesting, but the core characters are opposites in their own traditions. It's one of those "same events, different perspectives" situations in eschatology.
