âGrandpa, Iâm scared. â Max hugged herself on the grey roof. The tall bank building loomed over the city, giving her a good view of the city. She didnât need it though, considering her enhanced senses, including sight, allowed her to survey the area. Her grandfather stood beside her, and ran his fingers through his white hair. âWhatâs on your mind?â Max looked up at the clouds. A gust of wind blew by her spandex, the fabric was tight against her skin. The dark costume was a contrast to the bright and fun pastels the other members of her family wore. âIâm not sure I wanna do this. Be a hero, I mean. I mean, why do I have to protect the city.â Her grandfather looked down at her. At only ten, her hair ruffled in the wind. She was smart, this one, which was a blessing and a curse. But she wasnât naive. And that scared him. âBecause we have stand for whatâs right. Justice, freedom-â âNo, I mean, I get the whole âfreedom, and fairnessâ spiel, but I donât get whyâŚâ She huffed, stumbling with her words. âWho gets to decide whatâs wrong and whatâs right? You made the decision to sacrifice a city for us many years ago, grandpa. Was that wrong? To leave for us? Or right?â She was getting fired up, her heartbeat quickening. âYesterday I watched a robber get shot by a police officer. Was that justice? â She started to cry. âIt was terrible. I watched it. I didnât stop it, or do anything. I just watched. The police say they are justice, but was that right?â Her grandfather quickly engulfed her in a hug. It was terrible. The family often encouraged the young members to go out and be a hero, to be the light. And she had watched a man die. âMax, you need to understand, morality isnât black and white. Life is complicated.â He sighed. âWhat you saw isnât an accurate representation of justice. â âSays who?â She was full on bawling. âWhat if I make a bad choice? Is it right if itâs in the name of justice? I donât know what Iâm doing!â She dropped, letting herself fall into her grandfathers arms. âMax, whatever you do, Iâll be there. Your family will be there. And even if you mess up, or arenât sure, weâll help you.â She nodded, but he could tell that there was more. He comforted her and they headed home, but something she had said resonated with him. Who says whatâs wrong and right?
