Dr. Mae Jemison is the first black woman to go to space. Jemison is an engineer, physician, professor and former astronaut. she joined NASA in 1987 and was selected to serve for the STS- 47 mission in which she orbited the earth for eight days. She left NASA in 1993 to start her own company, The Jemison Group Inc. She also founded the Dorothy Jemison foundation for excellence. Her time in space has encouraged her to approach climate change as soon as possible because of how drastic the consequences of climate change are. Jemison uses social media to spread awareness on climate change. She has now set the 100 years Starship initiative to not only encourage further exploration into space but also encourage and initiate it in a sustainable manner. One of the consequences of climate change is coral bleaching which starves the corals and eventually kills coral reefs. The first and most important solution to my ecological issue, coral bleaching, would be raising awareness of its source, climate change. The more the people know about the concern, the closer we get to reducing its impact. Jemison's 100-year starship initiative further promotes sustainability. Such strategies to reduce the impact of climate change are required to end coral bleaching. Therefore, her experiences and understanding of climate change and the earth at large can help me study the causes of and solutions for coral bleaching. Jemison may possess the competencies of collaboration, communication, and citizenship. Such qualities would also benefit Jemison further in her career. The 100-year starship initiative requires collaboration with a number qualified individuals whom Jemison works with. Communication has helped Jemison spread the word on her initiative and the concerns of climate change. The competency of citizenship has made her successful in her occupation as it makes her more active in society and it has helped her create her own initiative.
