screaming crying wringing my hands over the some more than others scene
constantly thinking about the scene from arrested development in which george michael throws maeby a surprise party, because of course he does, and no one shows up. you know what's so great about this scene? its complete sincerity. in a show in which basically every line is a punchline, there are almost no jokes for a minute and a half. the george michael and maeby storyline started out as an awkward joke, but it culminates in this demonstration of real sympathy for the characters and a proper acknowledgement of the struggle for and potency of their love. I love that maeby comes in with her professional clothes and her chipped nail polish, because she’s turned herself into a grownup but she’s really just sixteen. I love the sad way he says "surprise!" — actually, the sad way that they say all their lines. I love that they unknowingly consume fake wine and get drunk on nothing but sadness and love. I love george michael’s cute little buster impression (sorry buster, I do love you too). I love ron howard's one hilarious line ("and a lot of us just didn't want to drive down to orange county") ; I also personally headcanon that he's a shipper and didn't show up to the party in order to leave them alone to kiss. I love that george michael isn’t visibly surprised by maeby's confession that she had a secret double life; he only says, “is that why you’ve been so stressed out all the time?” because he knows her so well. she says, “have I been?”: she hasn’t even been able to observe her own feelings because she’s been so caught up in her own state of expedited development. I love that they’re sitting on the floor. I love that she thinks that he’s telling her she might be adopted just to make her feel better; that’s both hilarious and sad, like so many things about this show. but he immediately responds “I wouldn’t”, because he would never lie to her; he would never treat her with anything less than pure, honest love. then george michael delivers the LINE OF THE FREAKING CENTURY OH MY GOD.
"everyone still loves you. some more than others."
yeah, it's objectively kind of crazy of him to say "I love you more than your family does." but if that's what he meant (which I doubt), I forgive him because it's basically true. however, you could also say that that he really does believe that everyone loves her, because he can't even fathom not loving her.
and then they look at each other with such tenderness and sadness and love, AND THEN THEY KISS. and I really like how the camera pans away, providing both discretion and elegance to the end of the scene.
truly THE george michael and maeby scene.
