My latest brew! A Scottish โ90 Shilling Aleโ or โWee Heavyโ as itโs more commonly known. Scottish ales are rich, sweet, malty and very low on hops. This is mostly due to the scarcity of hops available to Scottish brewers in centuries past. - The โ90 Shillingโ designation is from an old tradition in Scotland where different strength ales would be priced differently. So a โ30 Shillingโ ale would be the light (in alcohol, not color) version. โ60 Shillingโ ale was in the middle and the heavy duty, โWee Heavyโ (6% abv and above) was 90 shillings. Mine came in at 8% abv which is generally the range most wee heavies exist in, but they can go as high as 10% abv.
