Her grandparents were Estonian expats who fled from the advancing German and Soviet armies during WW2 (tens of thousands of people fled west, including some of my own relatives who still live in the US and Canada).
As a third-generation expat, she and her siblings mostly identify as Americans, but she still knows enough Eesti keel to hold simple conversations (and curse up a storm if she wants). Meryl and her family have probably also been visiting relatives in Estonia about once a year ever since the borders opened up again.
