And third, a scorpion that, when injured, buries itself in the sand and secretes a substance from its wounds that crystallizes the sand into a patch for its carapace. The book also mentions that this species of scorpion is an especially vivid glower under UV light, and was almost hunted to extinction as their crystalline patches could be processed into brilliant gems. Additionally, the scorpion is believed to be the inspiration for a mythological creature found in ancient Shuriman stories, though the book treats this as a fun fact, and doesn't even bother to mention what this mythological creature was called, preferring to focus on scientific information instead.]
