A few weeks ago I posted on the macabre history of graveyard overcrowding in 19th century London, and the creation of Highgate Cemetery. There was one story embroiled in that strange history that deserved its own post, and here it is. Warning, some of the descriptions are of a graphic nature. With the population of London more than doubling during the late 18th and early 19th century, the space for burials, had run out. Left to the parish churches to resolve the problem, this had led to a dangerous overcrowding of burials. Stories from the period, talk of mourners witnessing their loved ones graves being dug, whereupon another was discovered, if the grave was within five, the remains were stomped into the ground to provide space for a new burial on top. Older burials were removed and cast aside to allow space, with coffins burned for firewood. This overcrowding had led parish churches to simply pile the dead into their church basements, and the worst offending of these was Enon Chapel. Opened in 1822, in the poorer area of London, near Clements Lane in The Strand, Enon Chapel’s beginnings in having been built over an open sewer were grim. Serving a poor area, the chapel’s basement became the internment of the area’s dead, with thin boards, and thinner layers of soil separating the decomposing dead from the living who attended the church above. Its minister Mr W. Howse, capitalizing on the lack of burial space in the area, took to filling the basement with the dead to its ceiling, and to maximize the space having the coffins smashed up and used as firewood. 14th November 1687, death from apoplexy of famed English Restoration period actress, and mistress of King Charles II of England, Eleanor "Nell" Gwyn. Called "pretty, witty Nell" by the diarist Samuel Pepys. Growing up in Coal Yard Alley, a poor slum off Drury Lane in London, as tradition has suggested; Gwyn was perfectly positioned with the restoration of monarchy in 1660, and Charles II’s restoration of theatre, and public entertainments, which had been banned by the Puritan’s in 1642. In 1663 Drury lane saw the opening of the new playhouse, which would later (and to this day) be known as the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Selling oranges to the theatre audiences, a profession known as an "orange-girls", combining selling fruit and sexual favours; Gwyn was surrounded by London’s affluent society including the king himself. A year later she became one of the first known female actresses, in a profession previously only open to male players, who would also perform the roles of both men and women on stage. Eleanor "Nell" Gwyn died on this day of apoplexy, or a stroke as it is now more commonly known. It is ironic therefore that Charles II had patented his own medicine named the King’s Drops, using powdered human skulls, which was intended to cure this very ailment. Cannibalistic medicines such as Charles II’s, were at the height of their perceived reputation in the 17th century, and the King’s Drops was sold alongside many other medicines, containing human blood, bones, and fat. Another previous mistress of Charles II, French woman Louise de Keroualle, who was also a spy for Louis XIV, Charles II’s cousin, would also die on the same day in 1734. Day 26 — The Boys: Cool summer night on top deck at @pinthalifax and saw these guys having some good laughs. Looked like they were catching up on a few things and made me a bit jealous I wasn’t doing the same. My friends being busy when I’m free and me being busy when they’re free. I was okay with that though since I know there will be a time I’ll seem them. I was pretty content and it was cool to see some others enjoying themselves. Although some people I knew from my high school invited me over to their table and it ended up being a nice chat and overall good night because of it. I really appreciated it.
